What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transportation Engineer Associate - Statewide position at West Virginia Department of Transportation (WV)?

The Transportation Engineer Associate in this position will be assigned to the Operations Division and may report to either the Long Span LR Unit Lead or the QA/QC LR Unit Lead. This position will provide support to either the Long Span Load Rating Unit or the Quality Assurance and Quality Control Load Rating Unit under the Statewide Load Rating and Permitting Section. Applicants should have load rating experience. Applicants will review bridge inspection reports, review district bridge evaluations, initiate bridge evaluations, and perform independent load rating estimates. Assignments are varied, becoming more complex, and will further develop the applicant’s ability to apply engineering judgement to the evaluation of bridge structures. Work will be reviewed throughout the assignment for completeness and technical accuracy. The applicant will be required to perform bridge evaluations using AASHTOWare BrR software and assist district evaluation staff as needed. Performs related work as required.

• Prepare special engineering reports for higher-level executives.
• Trains and evaluates personnel to ensure quality work.
• Plans, schedules, and coordinates the activities of sections or groups.
• Evaluates the performance of subordinate engineers and other personnel.
• Serves as a district or division engineering head for a unit or functional area.
• Evaluate data collected by field personnel and incorporate the same into studies and plans.
• Reviews contract plans, specifications, test results, and agreements from an engineering aspect for accuracy and completeness.
• Performs duties in a transportation engineering specialty such as concrete, steel, bituminous materials, environmental measurements, geotechnical evaluations, instrumental analysis, computer applications, structural analysis, electronics, metallography, corrosion, welding and mathematical analysis, transportation systems analysis, route location, project evaluation, transportation planning, design, pavement, hydraulics, or other related fields.
• Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required.• Knowledge of the current principles, methods, and practices of civil engineering.
• Knowledge and understanding of internal policies, procedures, and practices of the Department.
• Knowledge of engineering research techniques.
• Ability to supervise and plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the activities of professional engineering staff.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with districts, divisions, industry, governmental units, public interest groups, and individuals.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to conduct successful applied research in a specialized branch of transportation engineering.
• Ability to write professional quality papers, reports, research studies, and projects.REQUIRED TRAINING/EDUCATION
- Current license as a registered professional engineer in West Virginia.
- Graduation from an EAC/ABET accredited four (4) year engineering program or the equivalent as approved by the WV Board of Registration for Professional Engineers. Please attach your degree's transcript or diploma to your application.
