Salary Terms: Pay Grade C. Monday - Friday 10:30 am - 2:00 pm. from June 22- July 24, 2026. Position of employment contingent upon adequate student enrollment and/or attendance. Daily rate plus competitive benefits package equal to approximately 35% of direct compensation. Holidays are non-paid days.

Reports to: Building Principal, Assistant Principal

Evaluation: Evaluated annually by the building principal/immediate supervisor in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and NCBOE Policy 4220

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Qualifications:
  1. High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5
  2. Personnel must be or have been classified in this category, or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e
  3. Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c
  4. The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description

Title:

Custodian III (means a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating or cooling systems, and to make minor repairs)

Job Summary:

To perform duties which keep the county buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions of the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator.

The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated.

Staff members serve as role models for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

Staff members have a legal responsibility to help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Works safely using proper body mechanics and lifting techniques thus decreasing risk of injury to self and to co-workers

  • Performs custodian work involving independent activity to keep school clean, sanitary, and in an orderly condition, as well as minor maintenance tasks
  • Performs assigned manual work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility. Job assignments are in the form of written or oral instructions and are performed under supervision and reviewed periodically.
  • Must clean and wash floors, walls, ceilings; dust and polish furniture, wash windows; strip, spray, buff, wax, and polish floors; wash and clean rest rooms; dispose of garbage and trash
  • Set-up and shift furniture and furnishings as assigned
  • Aids students, teachers, public, and other employees as assigned
  • Transports teaching supplies and equipment as required by teaching staff and principal
  • Maintains watch over property and grounds against trespassing, vandalism, and fire hazards. Signal police and fire departments when needed.
  • Maintains all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a good state of preservation.
  • Performs supportive duties such as: Displays Flag; Flies Flag at half-staff;
  • Inventories supplies;
  • Reports safety hazards within building;
  • Stores equipment;
  • Services carpeted areas;
  • Assists in building maintenance by replacing window glass, cleaning gutters and drainpipes, freeing stopped sanitary and sink plumbing, repairing leaks, repairing furniture, doing simple painting, replacing lights, and performing other related work as assigned
  • Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
  • Maintains grounds by cutting grass with hand and power mowers and string trimmers, collecting litter, trimming bushes and small trees, raking grounds, and performing minor repairs to walks, paths, walls, play apparatus, roads, and site improvements
  • Snow and ice removal duties, treat sidewalks and parking lots as assigned
  • Operates heating, lighting, ventilation, cooling, and electrical systems as assigned.
  • Perform routine lubrication services and minor preventative maintenance services.
  • Operates security systems and fire safety systems
  • Inspects buildings and reports deficiencies
  • Performs inventory control checks
  • Orders miscellaneous custodian materials and supplies
  • Keep Materials Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) records as assigned
  • Promotes and maintains positive pupil-staff-community relations
  • Maintains confidentiality, unquestionable integrity;
  • Performs duties efficiently and productively
  • Performs otherduties assigned by principal/immediate supervisor or superintendent of schools

Physical Demands:

Sitting: Rarely: ½ hour in an 8-hour work shift

Standing: Constantly: 2 hours in an 8-hour work shift. Alternates continuously with walking

Walking: Constantly: 5 ½ hours in an 8-hour work shift

Lifting and Carrying:
  • 1-10 pounds Continuously Cleaning supplies, stocking items, ladders, salt, mop buckets, mops, etc.
  • 11-22 pounds Continuously Cleaning supplies, operate string trimmer, gas cans, etc.
  • 21-35 pounds Frequently Buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, operate string trimmer, snow removal, etc.
  • 36-50 pounds Frequently Buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, lawn mowers, snow removal, etc.
  • 51-75 pounds Rarely Buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, lawn mowers, snow removal, moving furniture, etc. (Employ assistance with items over 50 pounds)
  • 76-100 pounds Rarely Buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, lawn mowers, snow removal, moving furniture, etc. (Employ assistance with items over 50 pounds)
  • 100 pounds Rarely Buckets of cleaning agents, emptying garbage, stocking inventory items, deliveries, lawn mowers, snow removal, moving furniture, etc. (Employ assistance with items over 50 pounds)


Frequently Pushing & pulling Floor buffer, broom, mop, garbage cans, shoveling snow, mowing grass, etc.

Forward bending Frequently Mowing grass, operate string trimmer, pick up garbage, cleaning tables, chairs, and desks, shoveling snow, etc.

Squatting & stooping Frequently Picking up debris inside and outside, cleaning the building, etc.

Kneeling Rarely Cleaning, weeding, spot scrubbing floors, etc.

Crawling Rarely Spot scrubbing floors, cleaning baseboards, etc.

Occasionally Climbing Washing windows, cleaning tops of shelves and cabinets, etc. Overhead reaching Occasionally Washing windows, cleaning tops of shelves and cabinets, etc.

Hazards Sprains/strains from improper lifting techniques, burns from improper handling of chemicals, etc. Machines/equipment/tools Lawn mowers, string trimmers, floor buffer, floor scrubber, vacuums, etc.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as reading handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.

The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
