Job Summary
The Assistant Basketball Coach supports the Head Coach in building a successful basketball program that promotes sportsmanship, student growth, teamwork, and academic achievement. The coach will assist with practice planning, skill development, supervision, and game-day responsibilities in accordance with county and WVSSAC guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Head Coach in planning, organizing, and conducting practice sessions.
- Teach and develop fundamental and advanced basketball skills for student-athletes.
- Supervise athletes during practices, games, travel, and other team activities.
- Support implementation of game strategies, scouting reports, and film review.
- Promote positive sportsmanship, discipline, teamwork, and character development.
- Monitor the academic progress, attendance, and eligibility of student-athletes.
- Maintain a safe practice and game environment, including proper equipment use.
- Communicate effectively with players, parents, administration, and staff.
- Assist with maintaining equipment, uniforms, and inventory.
- Uphold WVSSAC rules, board policies, and school athletic procedures.
- Model professional conduct and serve as a role model for student-athletes.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or Principal.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred.
- Prior basketball playing or coaching experience preferred.
- Must meet all WVSSAC and county requirements for coaching certification, background checks, and training (including CPR/First Aid, sports safety, and WVSSAC coaching course).
- Ability to build positive relationships with students and staff.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Work Environment
- Practices, games, and travel may occur outside regular school hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Requires physical activity, ability to demonstrate skills, and supervision of students.
