POSITION: 1.0 History 

LOCATION: West Valley High School

QUALIFICATIONS:  All qualifications are required unless otherwise indicated.

  1. Valid Secondary Washington State Teacher’s Certification with a major in History required.
  2. Masters degree in History preferred.
  3. Evidence of successful high school Language Arts teaching experience preferred.
  4. Other endorsements preferred.

JOB DESCRIPTION 

  1. Teach all levels of History as assigned.
  2. Utilize student assessment data to formulate instruction decisions.
  3. Incorporate dynamic, interactive, student involved, hands-on instructional style.
  4. Actively engage students in the learning process using interactive, problem solving and research based instructional methods.
  5. Regularly incorporate higher-level thinking and analytical skills in instruction, assessment and performance.
  6. Incorporate interactive, problem solving, and researched based instructional methods.
  7. Maintain a positive, productive learning climate within the classroom as well as with parents and colleagues.
  8. Provide differentiated instruction to meet diversified student learning needs.
  9. Incorporate technology into the instructional process.
  10. Develop reading/writing relevance for all students including a willingness to incorporate work-based reading and writing skills within the curriculum.  
  11. Be a team player by establishing and maintaining cooperative professional relationships with others.
  12. Actively engage with other departmental members in professional learning communities, development of common assessment standards, and other aspects that ensure every student has the opportunity for a rigorous and relevant education.
  13. Be innovative and committed to the challenge of change in education.
  14. Regularly assess student work, input grades regularly into Family Access, and regularly contact parents regarding student performance/behavior in your classroom.
  15. Actively participate in all workshops and training sessions that support building and district programs and goals, including the West Valley School District professional growth program (TAP/ACCEL).  
  16. Implement the requirements of I.D.E.A., Section 504, and A.D.A. in the education of students with disabilities.
  17. Make the commitment to supervise a variety of student activities outside the regular school day (dances, athletic events, etc.).  
  18. Actively assume responsibility for a set of students to mentor through all phases of career education, portfolio development, high school and beyond plan.

Working Relationships
Work in partnership with both large and small groups of teachers and other professional staff. Communicate regularly with students, parents/guardians, and teaching staff. Team up with grade-level colleagues to plan lessons, analyze student data, and maintain a focus on continuous improvement. Cooperate with the building administrator in the observation and evaluation process. When working with instructional paraprofessionals, provide appropriate lesson plans and activity supervision. May deal with a wide range of student abilities and behaviors; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students.

Working Conditions
The daily work is performed in a classroom setting. The job incumbent is often required to stand or sit for prolonged periods, be exposed to a computer display terminal for prolonged periods, and meet externally imposed and inflexible deadlines. May be required to work outdoors in inclement weather; lift, move, and position students and equipment; supervise students, bus loading/unloading; attend to students’ personal hygiene; may be required to deal with distraught, angry, or hostile individuals; may need to take precautions to avoid exposure to student bodily fluids and cleaning or disinfecting compounds; required to work in non-routine positions for extended periods.

 

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting (able to lift 50 pounds and assist in lifting over 50 pounds), carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 34% sitting, 33% walking, and 33% standing. The job related is performed under a generally hazard-free environment and in a clean atmosphere
