Starting Pay: $13.34/hour
The Diversion Peer Specialist uses lived experience in mental health recovery and/or justice involvement to support adults experiencing mental health crises. This role works within a Crisis Receiving/Jail Diversion (CR/JD) Center to help divert individuals from jail or psychiatric hospitalization and connect them to appropriate mental health and community-based services.
The Peer Specialist provides engagement, support, and rehabilitation-focused services that promote recovery, reduce symptoms of mental illness, and improve community functioning. Most services are delivered outside of a traditional clinic setting and involve collaboration with law enforcement, clinical staff, and community providers.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide peer-to-peer support to individuals diverted to the CR/JD Center
- Build trust and rapport using lived experience to support recovery goals
- Assist individuals in developing and working toward recovery plans and objectives
- Conduct warm hand-offs between law enforcement and the CR/JD Center
- Complete initial Brief Needs Assessments during intake
- Provide education on available services, treatment recommendations, and recovery engagement
- Support motivation, engagement, and adherence to recommended levels of care
- Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams and external service providers as needed
- Document all services within required standards (within 24 hours of service delivery)
- Ensure services are provided in accordance with authorization guidelines
- Participate in community outreach and service delivery activities
- Complete Medicaid Administrative Claiming (MAC) "Random Moment in Time" time studies when required
- Maintain Peer Provider credentials and required clinical supervision hours
- Complete all additional duties as assigned by the Crisis Coordinator
Requirements
- Lived experience with mental health recovery and/or justice involvement (peer qualification required)
- Valid Texas driver's license
- Acceptable driving record for insurability
- Access to and use of a personal vehicle for work-related travel
- Ability to work flexible hours, including community-based assignments
- Ability to complete documentation accurately and on time
- Willingness to maintain peer certification and required supervision hours
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trust with diverse populations
