The School Adjustment Counselor provides direct counseling, case management, and consultation services to students in the West Side Academy and SEBS (Social Emotional Behavioral Support) programs. This position supports students with IEPs who present with significant social, emotional, and/or behavioral needs. The role focuses on therapeutic intervention, crisis response, data-driven decision making, use of trauma-informed practices and collaboration to help students access learning, develop self-regulation skills, and successfully reintegrate into general education settings when appropriate.
The position requires flexibility and responsiveness within a therapeutic environment.
Direct Services:
-Provide individual and small group counseling aligned with students’ IEP social-emotional and behavioral goals.
-Implement evidence-based SEL and behavioral interventions within the SEBS and West Side Academy programs.
-Participate in daily check-in and check-out routines and ongoing student support throughout the school day.
-Conduct crisis intervention, de-escalation, and risk assessments related to safety concerns, self-harm, or threats.
-Develop safety plans and support re-entry meetings following significant incidents or hospitalization.
-Monitor student progress, collect and analyze counseling and behavioral data, and prepare progress reports.
Case Management and Collaboration:
-Collaborate closely with SEBS teachers, paraprofessionals, BCBAs, related service providers, and administrators to implement coordinated, student-centered supports.
-Contribute to the development, implementation, and monitoring of Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans.
-Communicate regularly with families to share progress, address concerns, and provide strategies to support students at home.
-Coordinate with community mental health providers, hospitals, and outside agencies to support wrap-around services and continuity of care.
-Support student transitions between settings, including reintegration into general education classrooms.
Compliance and Program Responsibilities:
-Participate in IEP team meetings, including assessment, goal writing, service delivery documentation, and progress reporting in accordance with IDEA and district requirements.
-Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation in accordance with state, federal, and district policies.
-Participate in and maintain QBS Safety-Care certification and follow established safety protocols.
-Contribute to staff training, professional development, and continuous improvement of SEBS and West Side Academy programming.
-Perform other duties consistent with the scope of the position.
Required:
-Massachusetts license as a School Adjustment Counselor or School Social Worker.
-Knowledge of child and adolescent development, trauma-informed practices, and behavioral intervention strategies.
-Experience providing counseling and crisis intervention to students with social-emotional and behavioral needs.
-Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
-Ability to engage and support diverse students and families.
Preferred:
-Experience working in therapeutic, alternative, or behavior-focused educational settings.
-Familiarity with Behavior Intervention Plans, Functional Behavioral Assessments, and data-driven behavioral supports.
-Experience collaborating with BCBAs and multidisciplinary teams.
-Knowledge of SEL frameworks such as Zones of Regulation or similar programs.
