Description of position:

West Physics has an immediate opening for an Associate Health Physicist. The Associate Health Physicist is an entry-level, full-time position based in Atlanta, GA. The Associate Health Physicist (once trained) is responsible for the hands-on performance of survey meter calibration services, including the calibration of GM meters and ion chamber survey meters, in accordance with established laboratory procedures, applicable US regulatory requirements, and quality system documentation. The Associate Health Physicist will work under the direct supervision of the Calibration Lab Assistant Manager and plays a critical role in maintaining calibration accuracy, data integrity, and client service standards within West Physics’ calibration laboratory.

This position requires a solid educational background in a STEM-related field, a strong interest and aptitude for learning, and a can-do attitude with an excellent work ethic. This role is a good fit for someone with excellent interpersonal skills, strong written and verbal communication, the ability to work independently and as part of a project team, and strong technical proficiency. The ability to exercise high responsibility and autonomy (once trained) is integral to this position. Primary Responsibilities:

Survey Meter Calibration

• Perform calibration of GM (Geiger-Mueller) survey meters and ion chamber survey meters in accordance with written laboratory procedures and applicable standards, including ANSI N323 series standards, NRC regulations, and applicable Agreement State requirements.
• Set up, operate, and maintain radiation calibration sources and associated calibration equipment in accordance with laboratory procedures and radiation safety requirements.
• Verify calibration source activities, geometry, and scatter corrections as required by laboratory calibration procedures.
• Perform as-found and as-left measurements and record results with full traceability to NIST-traceable calibration standards.
• Apply calibration correction factors and calculate calibration results in accordance with established mathematical methods and laboratory procedures.

Documentation and Data Integrity

• Complete calibration records, worksheets, and certificates of calibration in accordance with laboratory documentation standards and quality system requirements.
• Maintain accurate, legible, and contemporaneous records of all calibration activities; ensure records are stored in accordance with laboratory document control procedures.
• Report any measurement uncertainties, equipment anomalies, or non-conformances to the Assistant Manager promptly.
• Support the preparation and maintenance of calibration procedures, work instructions, and associated quality system documentation as directed

Equipment Maintenance and Inventory

• Perform routine maintenance, functional checks, and performance verification on calibration equipment and radiation sources.
• Notify the Assistant Manager of equipment malfunctions, out-of-tolerance conditions, or consumable supply needs.
• Assist in maintaining the laboratory equipment inventory database, including tracking of rental instruments and consumable supplies.

Radiation Safety and Compliance

• Comply with all applicable radiation safety regulations and laboratory safety policies, including proper use of personal dosimetry, personnel monitoring, and radiation protection measures.
• Maintain awareness of applicable US NRC, Agreement State, and DOT regulations pertaining to the possession and use of radioactive sources in the calibration laboratory.
• Participate in routine radiation safety surveys, source accountability audits, and emergency response drills as required by the radiation protection program.

Client Service and Communication

• Interact professionally with clients regarding technical aspects of their survey meter calibrations, turnaround times, and calibration results.
• Coordinate with the Assistant Manager to address client-specific calibration requirements, expedited service requests, or compliance questions.

Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement

• Participate in internal laboratory audits, proficiency testing, and quality improvement initiatives as directed by the Calibration Lab Manager or Assistant Manager.
• Support the laboratory's preparation for NVLAP accreditation by adhering to quality system procedures, participating in training, and maintaining audit-ready documentation at all times.
• Identify and communicate opportunities for process improvement, error reduction, or efficiency gains to the Assistant Manager.

Administrative & Technical Support

• Maintain personnel monitoring databases and spreadsheets
• Generate exposure metrics and management reports
• Assist with radiation safety committee reporting
• Support onboarding/offboarding dosimetry processing
• Assist with radiation safety training records and documentation

Prerequisites:

• Bachelor's (B.S.) degree in health physics, or a closely science/physics-related discipline, preferred. (Medical Physics, Radiation Sciences, Radiologic Sciences, Nuclear Engineering, Physics etc.)
• 0–3 years of experience in at least one of the following disciplines: Radiation Safety, Health Physics, Medical Physics support, or Nuclear Medicine; preferred.
• Knowledge of radiation protection principles and personnel monitoring techniques.
• Familiarity with federal regulations such as 10 CFR Part 20, 10 CFR Part 35, DOE Orders, NRC Regulations, Agreement State Regulations, or equivalent standards; preferred.
• Familiarity with dose management software such as Landauer, Mirion, etc.
• Familiarity and proficiency with basic health physics activities (e.g., survey instrument used, survey technique, leak testing, dosimetry review, etc.) and a willingness and aptitude to master more advanced health physics skills and activities; preferred.
• The ability to understand and apply regulations from various State and Federal entities to different client situations and write effective policy and procedures, Radiation Safety Manuals, and user-friendly forms.
• Solid foundation in radiation physics, radiation biology, electronics, and other areas relevant to equipment quality assurance testing; preferred.
• Effective written and oral communication skills, including professional, courteous, and convincing or persuasive in discussions with clients, regulators, and colleagues.
• Strong technical proficiency, the ability to manage multiple complex assignments concurrently and to completion, strong attention to detail, and the ability to deliver exceptional client service.
• Excellent time management and organizational skills.
• A working knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and excellent general computer skills. Familiarity with Apple computers (i.e., macOS) and applications is a plus.
• The candidate must be willing and open to being trained on new opportunities and activities to enhance their technical skill set.
• Applicant must have a valid U.S. Driver's License.
