Position: Health and Physical Education Teacher
Reports to: Principal - Assistant Principal
Assignment: 189 days
7.5 hours/day
Job Summary: The Health and Physical Education Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that fosters, promotes and develops an understanding of the relationship of healthy body and exercise. Encourage the development of student talents to achieve physical fitness in accordance with each student's ability focusing on student strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination.
Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education. Valid Pennsylvania teaching certificate. Demonstrate competency in the subject area(s) assigned. General knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
POSITION FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness and health education.
- Prepare and implement lesson plans, providing for appropriate learning experiences for each student.
- Demonstrates and explains basic skills, knowledge and strategies of formal sports, games, and fundamentals of body movement.
- Demonstrate skills being taught; assist students in performing skills.
- Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Monitor and evaluate student skill levels and outcomes.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment in physical education areas.
- Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field area to ensure the overall safety of students.
- Makes students aware of assessment standards/learner expectations.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Communicates realistic and consistent expectations for student behavior and applies appropriate consequences.
- Works cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning and implementing a balanced physical education program.
- Models enthusiasm for learning and teaching.
- Creates a positive, inviting and safe learning environment.
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
- Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
- Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies.
- Attend and participate in faulty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Other duties as assigned.
Perform other duties which may be assigned by the Building Principal, Assistant Superintendent and/or Superintendent.
GENERAL POSITION REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:
Must be able to stand 1 hour at one time.
Must be able to sit 4 hours at one time.
Must be able to walk 1 hour at one time.
Must be able to bend/stoop, squat, and reach above shoulder.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 20 pounds frequently.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
Must be able to do repetitive actions including grasping, pushing/pulling, fine-motor manipulation, writing or printing and twisting/turning frequently.
Must be able to use head and neck in static position, flexing and rotating frequently.
Must be able to adhere to daily time schedule.
Must be able to hear (40 decibel loss maximum).
Must be able to communicate verbally.
Must have vision requirements of near acuity of 20 inches or fewer and far acuity of 20 feet or more with depth perception, accommodation, and field of vision.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
Position encompasses entire building and grounds. Center of operation is the classroom, which is well-ventilated and well-lighted.
