Contingent Histotechnologist

Job Summary:

The Histology technician will perform various tasks regarding receiving, processing and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis. The specimens will be received from all West Michigan Dermatology locations.  Must be able to work independently and efficiently.  Must also be able to work collaboratively when needed with members of the clinical and pathology teams.

Job duties and functions:

• 
  Works under the direction of the Physician/Lab Director while following established procedures for specimen handling.

• Performs gross pathology on skin specimens including grossing, inking when necessary, dissection and selection of appropriate tissue sections and preparation of tissue blocks.
• Demonstrates knowledge of and proficiency in routine staining procedures and special staining procedures including control outcome. Prepare and maintain required reagents.
• Performs Immunohistochemistry procedures using automated IHC stainer.
• Produces high quality microscope slides.
• Labels requisitions, containers or cassettes and affixes coverslip on slides.

  Assists in filling slides and blocks, as well as setting up solutions for special stains.
• 
  Assists in the pathology lab with various functions as needed.
• 
  Demonstrates fiscal responsibility and recognizes the need for cost containment by following practices that minimize waste.
• 
  Maintains excellent work relationships with staff, providers and management. Is accountable for his/her actions or mistakes and takes a proactive approach to problem solving.
• 
  Adheres to department policy, and to CLIA, HIPAA and OSHA regulations at all times specifically with waste disposal and specimen integrity practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 
  Must possess a bachelor’s degree in a science related field at minimum.
• 
  For certain positions in our Pathology Lab, we will require that the candidate be a Registered Histology Technician (ASCP). Certified candidates must also have 2 years of relevant experience working in a dermatology histology lab.
• 
  Non-certified candidates must have a minimum of two years’ experience in a laboratory setting – a dermatology background is preferred.
• 
  Knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT coding.
• 
  Working knowledge of ModMed EMA (EMR) preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

• 
  Willing to comply with all CLIA regulations regarding quality control and lab standards.
• 
  Knowledge of internal laboratory policies and procedures.
• 
  Excellent command of medical terminology.
• 
  Excellent command of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• 
  Willing to learn new computer programs and applications.
• 
  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
• 
  Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with employees, physicians, and managers across all West Michigan Dermatology sites.

Special note: Due to the unique operational needs of our clinics, we may request that our employees work in a different site from the one they were originally scheduled in.  Sometimes these requests are planned and sometimes they are spontaneous and could be after the employee has reported to work for the day.  Reasons for these requests vary but they are mainly is to ensure coverage in case of high patient volume, unscheduled absences from other staff, etc.  Therefore, we require all our employees to have a valid and unrestricted driver’s license.  Mileage reimbursement will be paid in accordance with our Mileage Reimbursement Policy.
