WEST HARLEM RESIDENCE
The Recreational Specialist exercises skills in general and organized recreational activities with a challenged population. Plan, develop, administer and promote recreation programs and special events for the West Harlem Residence recreation program. This position is under the supervision of the Social Service Supervisor. Full time.
Essential Functions:

- Organizes, promotes and develops interest in activities such as arts and crafts, sports, music, drama, social recreation, camping and hobbies.
- Cooperates with other staff members in conducting community wide events and works with neighborhood groups to determine recreational interests and needs of all ages.
- Works in conjunction with Administration and Caseworkers to insure that recreation is well balanced, coordinated and integrated with Center Activities.
- Responsible for developing Activity Program Schedule on a monthly basis. Develops and performs activities to market and promote youth programs. Includes providing a calendar of events on a monthly basis.
- Performs clerical duties related to youth activities. Complete progress notes of all recreation attendees and submit weekly to Social Services Supervisor.
- Supervision of in-house computer technology. Assist in all program components including homework help, recreation, performing and visual arts, and interactive reading, math, and science activities.
- Plans and conducts field trips.
- Maintains equipment and supplies necessary for classes and or instruction. Maintains accurate inventory of equipment, supplies and donations.
- Exercises professional judgment and responsibility in the conduct of all recreational activities for various age groups. Provide age appropriate activities while motivating and engaging the participants in these activities
- Plans and conducts field trips. Ensure safety and adherence to any regulations of field trip location.
- Enforces all pool rules and regulations. Enforces all waterfront area and enforce park rules and regulations. Monitors youth /swimmers vigilantly to ensure their safety in and around public pool, pool area and parks.
- Researches products/services and procures materials for games, parties and events for recreation department.
- Reports recreation attendees concerns to Social Services Supervisor.
- Attends all training designated by site coordinator.
- Participates in Bi-Monthly staff meetings and trainings.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a part time position, expected work hours are 35 hours per week from Mondays through Fridays. Hours may vary due to activities during the Spring/Summer and Winter/Fall.
Travel Required:
Travel is primarily local during the business day.
Required Education and Experience:
- Minimum A.A. degree preferred.
- 2 years’ work experience in social work, youth services, or community organizing.
- Experience working with youth is a requirement.
- Other requirements include computer proficiency, and a strong commitment to serving clients.
