What are the responsibilities and job description for the Reliability Engineer position at West Fraser?

Reporting to the Reliability Manager, the Reliability Engineer supports the development and implementation of key elements of the plant reliability program.  The reliability engineer will be expected to organize and manage relevant data to identify the work and technologies that improve performance of the mill safely, effectively, and efficiently.  In addition, the qualified individual will be required to implement and execute projects aimed at resolving prioritized reliability initiatives.  This person must have the knowledge to make educated recommendations for improvements to the reliability program and must have the ability to marshal the resources necessary for accomplishing those goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Reliability Engineer is responsible for supporting the Reliability Manager with the analysis of processes and procedures and the evaluation of data involved in the production of OSB.  The Reliability Engineer is also responsible for identifying, managing and executing initiatives that lead to achieving production targets, improved margins, added efficiency and waste reduction.  To that end, these responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Promote the Reliability Programs under their area of responsibility including Condition Based Monitoring (CBM), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Preventive Maintenance (PM) & Predictive Maintenance (PdM), and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) usage.
  • Provide regular condition reports of all the assets in area of responsibility.
  • Use the CMMS to effectively plan, report and schedule relevant work.
  • Support and implement asset management improvements that involve all aspects of the manufacturing process (e.g. - PM, PdM, and CBM plans)
  • Manage third-party services in relation to the reliability programs and foster professional working relationships to leverage their knowledge and services.
  • Analyze production processes and recommend process improvements to gain efficiencies.  Actively work to reduce Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) and increase Mean Time to Between Failure (MTBF).
  • Review OEM equipment and make recommendations concerning Asset Life and maintainability.
  • Participate with vendors to design, install, and maintain new and existing assets regarding the reliability program.
  • Recommend, plan, and execute improvements in the work area to gain efficiencies in work processes.
  • Communicate effectively with team members across the site.
  • Monitor, track and report all unscheduled and efficiency downtime.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned 

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications required to successfully perform this role.  These are the qualifications that are necessary for someone to be considered for the position.  A reasonable accommodation may be allowed for some aspects of the role as determined by Human Resources.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • BS in an engineering discipline (mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, process) or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to work with a team and deliver value to the team
  • Eligible to legally work in the United States
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment physicals and a post-offer drug screen and criminal background check

Desired Skills: 

  • Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP)
  • Demonstrated success in a manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity of common industrial equipment such as pumps, motors, gearboxes, sensors, VFDs, mobile equipment etc.
  • Experience with a CMMS
  • Perform a variety of Reliability Analyses to identify areas of improvement ie. Pareto, FMECA, Fault Trees, Reliability Block Diagrams, Weibull Analysis etc.
  • Ability to work with spreadsheets and large databases for analysis and work planning

Specialized knowledge or skills that may be needed or required:

  • Knowledge of Condition Monitoring Techniques i.e., Vibration, Thermography, Oil Analysis, Ultrasonic, Lubrication etc.
  • Rockwell PLC Platform/Factory Talk/Vantage Point
  • Problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Develop constructive and cooperative working relationships and maintain them over time
