- Your current or past job titles might include Project Manager, Program Manager, Portfolio Manager, Machine Design Engineer, or Machine Shop lead roles like Owner-Estimator-Superintendent, etc.
- You have a minimum of five (5) years of experience in a one-off precision machining job shop engaged in all fabrication phases of complex finished products or assemblies, etc.
- You are adept with the use of CAD/CAM software.
- Your education might include an engineering degree, MBA, and you already are a PMI credentialed PMP. While not mandatory, those having such credentials are encouraged to apply.
- Methodologies like Agile, Six Sigma, Kanban, Scrum, Waterfall, XP, and Lean are second nature to your mindset when you are doing project planning, and you are adept with Office and project planning software.

If you can qualify to join the West Engineering Company team, each day you will be doing a wide variety of functions and doing different tasks in this business. Your actions as a Manufacturing Project Manager are to "make-it-happen", including:
- Being focused on and accomplishing the details of each step such as those listed below for each assigned project in cooperation with shop leadership, foremen and a mix of crafts-persons (machinists, welders, cutters, coaters, assemblers, support labor), as well as engineering, design, quality assurance, marketing, management and administrative personnel.
- As appropriate, your tasks may include procurement, expediting, troubleshooting, project status and reviews with management and / or customers, being alert for changes in contracted scope of work and associated change orders / revisions and completion of necessary communications for administration, marketing (sales), and management.
- Additional actions not listed in this job description may be appropriate to meet or exceed customer expectations of the finished and delivered product.
Tasks: The following is to give you an idea of the business and processing tasks that may be included in your work as a machining job shop Manufacturing Project Manager:
Pre-Sale Process: Respond to RFQ, RFP and exploratory inquiry for a single part up to complex fully operational assemblies or components, developmental prototypes to finished tooling and machinery for diverse private and public commercial, industrial and military applications. Skilled at use and applications of modeling and design software that interfaces with CNC controlled machinery.
Contracted Sale Process: When receiving a purchase order from a customer based on estimate/quote/proposal or repeat of a past sale, each part or component and/or assembly must be examined to define the best way to achieve timely provision of cost-effective, acceptable precision and quality, quantities, etc.
Planning Methodology: Clear steps or a series of iterations to the planning process to move each project from start-to-completion, delivery, customer acceptance and final payment.
Job Processing: From engineering drawings, models, samples, etc., CAD/CAM etc., draft the parts list. Then prepare and compile detailed drawings and specifications (GD&T) for each part. Then for each part and quantity of that part, tabulate your findings regarding procurement of the material and of its machining time (applied and elapsed) and procurement cost.
Decisions: Determine if each part must be custom-made or if it is a commonly available commercial item, i.e. the basis for the decision to acquire by purchase, make via subcontractor(s) or that the part must be custom-made within the job shop.
- If buy, specification(s), quantity and source(s), quote or best price, leading to procurement (purchase order preparation, transmittal and acceptance by provider).
- If sub-contract, identify competent and trustworthy sources for quote, make selection and issue purchase order. Follow-up and expediting as appropriate.
- If make-in-shop, detail part material acquisition and fabrication step(s), i.e. compile the Fabrication Traveler for the part. Steps may include procurement of materials, movement of the part through each consecutive processing step, including assignment of labor, processing equipment work area, record keeping, materials staging and handling, measurements (CMM, etc.) and testing, quality control, preparation for transportation to customer, etc. Processing steps may include approval and receipt of materials, cutting, burning, sawing, rolling, bending, welding, grinding, heat treating, CNC or manual machining of all types, balancing, coatings, wiring and pipes/tubing, assembly, testing, and more.
Assembly: Bring approved parts together into modules or final product, finishing, inspection, testing and quality control, tracking, final approval for shipping, packaging, loading for transportation, and other logistical steps as appropriate for the job.
