Position Summary

West Catholic Preparatory High School seeks a mission-driven, student-centered Spanish Teacher who is committed to academic excellence, language acquisition, cultural understanding, and the holistic formation of students.

The Spanish Teacher will create engaging, standards-aligned instruction that develops students’ abilities to listen, speak, read, and write in Spanish. Instruction should provide students with meaningful opportunities to communicate in the target language, explore the cultures of Spanish-speaking communities, collaborate with others, and apply their learning to authentic situations.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, and deliver engaging Spanish lessons aligned with course standards and world-language proficiency goals.
• Provide instruction that develops students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in Spanish.
• Use the target language regularly and purposefully to create an immersive and supportive language-learning environment.
• Design learning experiences that emphasize meaningful communication rather than isolated vocabulary or grammar instruction.
• Incorporate the history, traditions, perspectives, and contemporary experiences of diverse Spanish-speaking cultures into instruction.
• Provide opportunities for students to participate in conversations, interpret authentic texts and media, and present information in Spanish.
• Teach vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and language structures within meaningful and authentic contexts.
• Adapt instruction for individual, small-group, and whole-class learning to meet the needs of students with varying levels of language proficiency.
• Employ a broad range of instructional strategies, including modeling, discussion, collaborative learning, role-playing, technology integration, projects, presentations, and authentic language resources.
• Build strong relationships with students while maintaining clear behavioral and academic expectations.
• Help students develop confidence, persistence, and a willingness to communicate in Spanish, even when they make mistakes.
• Create an interactive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment that encourages participation and responsible academic risk-taking.
• Evaluate student progress toward mastery of course content and growth in Spanish-language proficiency.
• Use formative assessments, student work, and performance data to identify gaps in understanding and adjust instruction accordingly.
• Provide timely, specific, and constructive feedback that helps students improve their language proficiency and take ownership of their learning.
• Establish and maintain clear standards for student behavior, classroom routines, academic effort, and academic integrity.
• Utilize educational resources and technology, including authentic texts, audio and video materials, digital language-learning tools, and other instructional materials.
• Adapt teaching methods, materials, and assessments to address students’ varying academic needs, learning styles, and readiness levels.
• Collaborate with colleagues and administrators to support consistent instructional expectations, student growth, and schoolwide goals.
• Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators to support student success.
• Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, school activities, and other responsibilities associated with being a member of the West Catholic community.
• Contribute to the life of the school beyond classroom instruction.

Qualifications

• Strong proficiency in spoken and written Spanish.
• Ability to model accurate Spanish pronunciation, grammar, and language usage.
• Knowledge of effective second-language acquisition and world-language instructional practices.

Education and Experience

• Required: Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, World Language Education, Education, or a related field.
• Preferred: Active Pennsylvania teaching certification in Spanish or an applicable World Language certification area.
• Candidates without active Pennsylvania teaching certification must have a minimum of twenty-four semester hours of college credit in Spanish or a closely related field to demonstrate subject-area competency.
• Preferred: Prior experience teaching Spanish at the high school level.
• Preferred: Experience teaching multiple levels of high school Spanish.
• Preferred: Experience designing proficiency-based, communicative, and culturally responsive world-language instruction.
• Preferred: Master’s degree in Spanish, World Language Education, Education, or a related field.
