What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Organizer/Caseworker position at West Bronx Housing and Neighborhood Resource Center, Inc.?
West Bronx Housing and Neighborhood Resource Center, Inc. (WBH) has worked since 1978 to preserve and protect the affordable housing stock of the Northwest Bronx. WBH takes a problem solving approach that incorporates both landlords and tenants and trains its clients along the way, up to and including building organizing when necessary.
WBH is currently looking to add a Community Organizer/caseworker to its team. Guided by the Executive Director and in coordination with our team of caseworkers and organizers, the Community Organizer/caseworker will be a main point of contact for outreach to distressed buildings in the Bronx. The Community Organizer/caseworker will be responsible for researching distressed buildings to potentially organize, distribution of materials in multiple languages, door knocking, scheduling tenant association meetings and Know Your Rights trainings. In conjunction with the Executive Director and/or the Housing Specialists, the Community Organizer/caseworker will also co-lead or lead these meetings. In addition, the Community Organizer/caseworker will assist with WBH's TRIE Neighborhood Initiative and the People's Money (Participatory Budgeting) cycle.
1. Researching buildings to organize.
2. Distributing materials in multiple languages.
3. Door knocking and canvassing buildings.
4. Assist buildings with forming and maintaining tenant associations.
5. Conducting Know Your Rights seminars to tenant associations.
6. Facilitating Idea Gathering Sessions for the People's Money.
Lastly, this position will require a very limited amount of casework.
WBH clients are majority monolingual Spanish speakers, so Spanish speaking ability is a must. Candidate must be a self-starter with experience in community organizing, public benefits, and/or rent stabilization and housing law. Candidate must be computer literate with knowledge of Access, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and have the ability to quickly learn city agency online platforms.
This position allows for one remote day per week after completion of a three month probation period, but applicants should still expect to be in the office four days a week when not in the field. This position requires the ability to climb up stairs if the elevator in a building is not working.
