Job Announcement

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs a variety of working level, skilled duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance, and upkeep and repair of recreation facilities, parks, grounds, trails, general environs, and building maintenance.

Works under the close to general supervision of the Public Works Director. Works as a daily team member under a Lead Maintenance Operator.

May provide close to general supervision to temporary, seasonal, volunteer or court ordered laborers on a project-by-project basis.

Performs general building maintenance; maintains small buildings, storage facilities, and recreational trails; assures proper operation of lighting fixtures, doors, windows, and plumbing; may assists in framing, painting, roofing or other skilled construction and maintenance activities related to carpentry, plumbing, and electrical; performs concrete work.

Performs maintenance of playground equipment; may assist to conduct safety audits on playground equipment and apparatus to assure Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Standard Consumer Safety Performance Specification for Playground Equipment for Public Use compliance; assists to make essential repairs replacing defective and deteriorating parts and pieces.

Performs various aspects of spraying programs related to the prevention or eradication of undesirable weeds, invasive plant species and insects harmful to park plants, trees, shrubs, and other environs; assures chemicals are properly stored and used in conformity with city, state, or Federal regulations; operates spraying equipment.

Maintains facilities within the parks and assists in the preparation for special events within the parks.

Maintains and improves grass area to ensure healthy and pristine conditions; operates lawn mowing equipment; performs routine repair and lubrication, mows and trims grass, bushes, and shrubs; assists in pruning activities on trees, shrubs, and plants; removes dead, diseased, or injured trees; stimulates healthy plant growth through custom pruning and cutting.

Performs general landscape and gardening duties; plants and transplants trees, shrubs, bushes, grass, flowers, etc. as directed to develop attractive parks and grounds; performs various fertilization techniques using dry and liquid chemicals; ensures chemicals are properly stored disposed of, and used in conformity with city, state, or Federal regulations.

Operates a variety of types of small and light equipment such as trucks and other motorized equipment, including lawnmowers, tractors, loaders, and backhoes and various hand tools; performs routine and regular maintenance on equipment to assure efficiency and safety; complies with appropriate OSHA Standards.

Oversees and performs general cleanup, maintenance, and repair of rest rooms, pavilions, playgrounds, picnic tables, benches, ball fields, volleyball courts, and other facilities; transports refuse from various environs.

Event Assistance: Provides assistance to event personnel as it relates to Parks duties; field layout, irrigation and mowing coordination, clean-up, and other duties as directed by Public Works Director; oversees and performs general cleanup, maintenance, and repair of rest rooms, playground, picnic tables, benches, ball fields, and other facilities; transports refuse from various environs.

Public Works Assistance: Provides backup assistance to the Public Works Director, serves as member of water or storm water system maintenance crew; participates in field operations related to the installation, maintenance and repair of related utilities infrastructure; assists with fire hydrant replacement, system flushing, water leaks, operation of water valves, etc.

Assist with snow removal of city streets, parking lots, and city owned sidewalks; assists with removal and delivery of materials to city worksites and project's; participates in various seasonal projects; assists in city cleanup and chipping; assists with street projects; filling pot holes, patching, digging out soft spots, replacing street signs, etc.; assist with SWPP's program; cleaning gutters, clean out storm boxes, etc.

Performs other related duties as required.

  1. Education and Experience:

A. Graduation from high school;

AND

B. Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance, upkeep, and beautification of turf, parks facilities, trees and related environs;

OR

C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

  1. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Working knowledge of grounds keeping and landscape management and maintenance; maintenance equipment such as backhoe, loader, dump truck, mowers, tractor, aerators, thatchers, trimmers, etc.; landscape and sprinkler system design; flow pumps; hazards and related safety precautions associated with equipment operations; turf and greens management; interpersonal communication skills.

Some skill in the operation of various types of light equipment such as mower, front end loader, tractor, backhoe, etc., basic mechanics, basic electrical, and plumbing operations, basic carpentry and masonry.

Ability to recognize and identify common weeds and pests; recognize and identify diseases common to turf and greenery; effectively apply chemicals for the abatement and eradication of noxious weeds and insects; effectively, perform various semi-skilled and skilled functions related to building maintenance; communicate verbally and in writing; develop effective working relationships with supervisor, subordinates, and the public.

3.Special Qualifications:

Must possess a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License (CDL-B).

May be required to become a Certified Play Ground Inspector.

  1. Work Environment:

Employee generally performs in a physically demanding environment. Periodic exposure to seasonal elements and all-weather extremes. Field work results in exposure to noise, fumes, vehicular traffic, dust, oils, herbicides, solvents and hazardous chemicals. Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving some muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, lifting, etc. Talking, hearing, and seeing essential to the performance of the job. Common eye, hand, finger dexterity required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discrimination thinking, and creative problem solving. Frequent local travel required in normal course of job.
