What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mascot – Polli the Head Pollinator position at West Bloomfield Parks and Recreation?
Position Description Summary: The individual filling this role will assume the persona of the Polli the Head Pollinator (a honey bee) by charming our audience through various appearances and engagements. Polli will interact with children and families in a fun and educational way. This position will attend our recreation and community events as needed. Working Hours: Any shift assigned will be at least two hours; dates and times will vary depending on community events. Schedule to be provided ahead of time for each season; listed below are some main events. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends to accommodate our event schedule. Some of our 2026 events include:
- Egg Scramble
- Earth Day Celebration
- Kids Komotion Concerts
- Marshbank Music Series
- Camp WB Ice Cream Social
- Camp Out
- Group Hayrides
- Trick Or Treat Trail
- Lily Pad Springs splash pad on occasion
- Community outreach events as scheduled
Essential Function(s) of the Position: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. - Assume the persona of the mascot character by conveying emotions, enthusiasm, exaggerated movements, gestures, and body language. Polli does not speak so communication must be done through hand motions and body language.
- Engage and entertain children and families in a friendly and approachable manner. Make thekids feel special and bring a smile to their face.
- Willingness to encourage audience participation, including leading cheers, and chants, as wellas pose for photos with children and families at events.
- Work closely with our Marketing and Events Manager in coordination with Programming staff tocoordinate a customized plan per event.
- Assist in marketing campaigns and promotional projects as needed.
- Help create a positive and lasting image through enthusiastic and energetic interactions withchildren and families.
- Maintain the mascot costume and ensure it is stored safely, clean, and in usable condition.
- Be punctual and prepared for all performances.
Education/Experience/Licenses/Certificates:
- 16 years of age or older
- High school diploma in progress or equivalent
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License
- Previous experience as a mascot, actor, or performance is highly desirable
- Must possess a strong desire to work with children and families
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to be able to bend, jump, squat, sit, stand, and meet kids at eye level.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service with a friendly and open demeanor.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and recognize and deal with priorities.
- Strong time management skills and self-starter.
- Strong communication skills. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely.
- Ability to perform all duties in an independent manner with little supervision, to think independently and exercise good judgment.
- Ability to make decisions, demonstrate good judgement when investigating problems, to tactfully handle difficult situations, to seek guidance and direction as necessary.
Software, Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Vehicles Used: May use office equipment and company vehicle as needed.
Physical Demands: Excellent physical stamina and endurance. Ability to perform in a confined mascot costume for extended periods, often in varying weather conditions. Must be able to stand for periods of time and withstand the outdoors for some periods of time, in all elements. Must be able to lift 50 pounds, be able to squat and bend over.
Working Conditions: May be exposed to extreme heat/cold when occasional field time is required. Must be able to work in conditions that may be dirty and/or dusty, long hours, and traveling.
Reporting Relationships: A person in this position will report to the Marketing and Events Manager.
Pay: From $17.39 per hour
