Job Summary
The Coating Operator is responsible for applying high-performance coatings to parts using thermal spray processes such as HVOF (High Velocity Oxy-Fuel), and Plasma equipment. This position involves setup, operation, and breakdown of spray equipment, as well as handling and transferring parts between cells. The Operator ensures coatings meet required specifications by following work instructions, monitoring equipment, and documenting process parameters.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate Plasma, HVOF, and Twin Wire Arc thermal spray systems
- Load and unload parts into thermal spray cells
- Initiate and monitor spray process using controllers
- Transport parts to and from spray cells using carts or manual lifting as appropriate
- Perform basic equipment setup and teardown, including torch assembly and parameter adjustments
- Follow written and verbal work instructions and standard operating procedures
- Record spray parameters, part tracking information, and inspection results in logbooks or systems
- Comply with all safety procedures, including use of PPE and adherence to hazardous materials protocols
Core Competencies & Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1 year of experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment
- Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds with assistance
- Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools
- Basic knowledge of measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers)
- Experience operating Plasma and/or HVOF thermal spray systems
- Familiarity operating NADCAP and AS9100 quality and documentation requirements
- Exposure to aerospace or precision component manufacturing
- Attention to Detail – Ensures coatings meet specifications; identifies deviations early
- Independence – Works efficiently with limited supervision
- Safety awareness – Maintains strict adherence to safety protocols and PPE use
- Technical Capability – Understands spray equipment, parameters, and troubleshooting basics
- Communication – Clearly documents and shares work-related information with team
Physical Demands
- Stand, walk, bend, lift for extended periods of time
- Lift or move up to 50 pounds regularly
- Use hands and fingers to operate tools, machinery, and equipment
- Work in environment that may include exposure to noise, heat, dust or chemicals
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) as needed
