Company Overview:

Wendler Inc. is Iowa’s leading builder of civil and municipal infrastructure, including water and wastewater treatment plants, flood protection, and high-voltage electrical projects.

With more than 50 years of experience and a team built from the field up, we deliver high-difficulty, high-value projects safely, collaboratively, and on schedule. Whether through traditional bid or CMAR delivery, we work as a trusted partner from day one—and stand by our work long after closeout.

Job Summary:

Wendler Inc. is seeking an experienced Concrete Boom Pump Operator who can step into the role and safely operate our concrete pumping equipment. A successful candidate must have hands-on experience operating a concrete boom pump in an active construction environment and be confident in independently setting up, operating, cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining the equipment.

Our Pump Operator plays an important role in keeping concrete placements safe, efficient, and on schedule. This position requires strong equipment knowledge, sound judgment, attention to surroundings, and the ability to coordinate effectively with project teams, concrete suppliers, truck drivers, and field crews.

If you are an experienced operator who takes pride in your equipment, understands what a safe setup looks like, and can anticipate problems before they become downtime, we want to talk with you.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Safely drive and operate a concrete boom pump truck to and from construction projects.
  • Independently evaluate jobsite conditions and determine safe, effective pump setup and positioning.
  • Properly deploy outriggers and establish a stable operating area based on ground conditions, clearances, access, and surrounding hazards.
  • Operate the hydraulic boom and pumping system using remote controls to accurately place concrete.
  • Monitor concrete flow, pressure, equipment performance, and changing jobsite conditions throughout the pour.
  • Coordinate with ready-mix drivers, foremen, superintendents, laborers, and other project personnel to keep pours moving safely and efficiently.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to blockages, equipment issues, unsafe conditions, and changes in the pour.
  • Safely clean out the pump, boom, hopper, hoses, and related equipment following each placement.
  • Complete required pre-trip, post-trip, and daily equipment inspections.
  • Perform routine operator-level maintenance and identify mechanical or hydraulic concerns before they result in equipment failure.
  • Immediately communicate equipment deficiencies, maintenance needs, damage, or safety concerns.
  • Maintain the pump truck and associated equipment in a clean, professional, and job-ready condition.
  • Follow DOT requirements, company safety policies, manufacturer operating requirements, and all applicable jobsite procedures.
  • Assist with other field, equipment, or shop responsibilities when pumping work is not scheduled.
  • Travel to project locations and work varying hours based on concrete schedules and project needs.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • 3 years of recent, verifiable experience independently operating a concrete boom pump; 5 years strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience setting up, operating, cleaning, inspecting, and maintaining concrete pumping equipment.
  • Valid Class B CDL, Class A preferred, and an acceptable driving record.
  • Current DOT medical certification or ability to meet applicable DOT requirements.
  • Strong understanding of concrete pumping operations, boom positioning, setup requirements, outriggers, hose handling, and jobsite hazards.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic and mechanical systems sufficient to recognize and troubleshoot common operating issues.
  • Experience performing pre-trip/post-trip inspections and routine operator maintenance.
  • Ability to assess changing site conditions and make safe decisions without constant supervision.
  • Strong situational awareness and attention to equipment, people, structures, overhead hazards, and surrounding operations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with field leadership, crews, customers, suppliers, and other trades.
  • Dependable attendance and the flexibility required to support changing concrete pour schedules.
  • Ability to work independently while remaining an effective part of the project team.
  • This position is designated as a safety-sensitive role. The concrete boom pump operator is expected to adhere to strict safety protocols and procedures to ensure their well-being and the safety of others. This includes, but is not limited to, the responsible handling of materials and equipment, and adhering to all workplace safety guidelines and regulations.
