What are the responsibilities and job description for the Control Engineer position at WEM Automation - A Valstone Company?

Company Description

WEM Automation, with over 70 years of expertise, is a trusted leader in industrial automation, specializing in precision process control systems for demanding industries such as feed and asphalt. We prioritize long-term partnerships with our customers, ensuring that our time-tested and reliable systems keep operations running smoothly. Our dedicated support team provides assistance from installation to optimization, delivering consistent performance and peace of mind. When you choose WEM, you gain a dependable control system and a partner committed to supporting you at every step.

What You’ll Do

Design and Program Automation Systems

  • Interpret customer equipment lists, flow diagrams, and functional requirements to design control systems that meet scope and safety standards.
  • Create and test PLC control logic (primarily Allen-Bradley / Rockwell).
  • Design, animate, and test HMI graphics using Wonderware InTouch and Ignition, ensuring intuitive operator interfaces and alarm functionality.

Test, Troubleshoot, and Support

  • Simulate and validate all PLC and HMI functionality prior to quality control hand-off.
  • Assist in final system verification during quality control and support system startup on-site as needed (light travel).
  • Document your work clearly, from schematics and IO lists to logic descriptions and change logs.

Collaborate to Get it Right

  • Work closely with fellow engineers, project managers, and our field service team to ensure project requirements are met on time and on spec.
  • Participate in customer training sessions or post-installation support when required.
  • Communicate status and blockers proactively—your updates help keep projects on track.

Work with Discipline and Consistency

  • Follow internal standards for PLC/HMI development to ensure consistency across projects and teams.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts in code quality, tools, and documentation practices.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or related field preferred. Equivalent technical training or experience also considered.
  • 1–3 years of experience in control system design, PLC programming, and HMI development preferred—but we’ll invest in the right engineer with strong potential.

Skills & Tools

  • Strong working knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLCs (SLC, CompactLogix, ControlLogix).
  • Experience with Wonderware InTouch and/or Ignition HMI platforms.
  • General familiarity with SQL, VB scripting, and additional programming in C# or Python is a plus.
  • Understanding of industrial field devices and their interface with control systems.

Mindset & Traits

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented—you like clean code, complete schematics, and no surprises.
  • Effective communicator—you can explain what’s happening in your logic to an operator, a PM, or another engineer.
  • Proactive problem-solver—you work to anticipate issues, not just react to them.
  • Customer-focused—you understand that system reliability, usability, and clarity build long-term trust.

Why WEM? Why Now?

At WEM, you won’t just build control systems—you’ll help build our future. You’ll see your work operating in real-world environments, supported by a team that values clarity, quality, and commitment. Backed by Valstone, WEM is entering a new phase of growth—bringing modern tools and best practices to a legacy of excellence.
