A Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Registered Nurse (BMT RN) provides specialized, comprehensive care to patients undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants. The BMT RN plays a critical role in managing the complex needs of these patients, including pre-transplant evaluations, post-transplant care, and addressing treatment-related complications. The BMT RN collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal patient outcomes and recovery.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, and provide specialized nursing care to patients undergoing bone marrow or stem cell transplants.
- Administer chemotherapy, radiation, and other immunosuppressive therapies as prescribed for conditioning and post-transplant care.
- Monitor patients for treatment-related side effects, including infections, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), bleeding, and other complications.
- Educate patients and families on the transplant process, including pre-transplant preparation, post-transplant care, medications, and potential complications.
- Collaborate with hematologists, oncologists, and other healthcare professionals to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Provide emotional support to patients and families, addressing the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges of undergoing a transplant.
- Monitor and manage patient symptoms such as pain, fatigue, nausea, and infection, ensuring optimal symptom control.
- Assist in the collection and processing of bone marrow or stem cell transplants, ensuring proper documentation and coordination of care.
- Participate in the coordination of pre-transplant evaluations, donor selection, and post-transplant follow-up.
- Monitor vital signs, blood counts, and laboratory results, ensuring adherence to infection control protocols.
- Educate patients and caregivers on infection prevention, nutrition, medication compliance, and adherence to post-transplant care guidelines.
- Maintain comprehensive and accurate documentation of patient care, interventions, and progress according to hospital and regulatory standards.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including social workers, dietitians, pharmacists, and other specialists, to ensure comprehensive care for BMT patients.
- Participate in clinical research, quality improvement initiatives, and ongoing education to enhance care for BMT patients.
- Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred; Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) accepted.
- Licensure:
- Valid Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
- Certification:
- Certified in Oncology Nursing (OCN) or BMT-specific certification preferred or obtainable.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
