Weldon Steel is seeking an experienced Steel Buyer to join our procurement team. This is a full-time, hourly position based in Weldon, NC reporting to the Purchasing Manager. The ideal candidate will be an energetic, hands-on operations professional with experience buying structural steel or other commodities in a fast-moving industrial setting.
Position Summary
Steel Buyer is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing structural steel products and related materials required for manufacturing and construction. The role focuses on ensuring cost-effective procurement, managing inventory, maintaining supplier relationships, monitoring market trends, and ensuring timely delivery of materials while meeting quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Source and purchase steel products, including coils, sheets, plates, tubes, bars, and structural steel.
- Manage inventory levels and minimize scrap.
- Negotiate pricing, payment terms, and delivery schedules with suppliers.
- Monitor steel market conditions, pricing trends, and supply availability.
- Maintain strong relationships with domestic steel mills, service centers, and distributors.
- Evaluate supplier performance based on quality, cost, and delivery metrics.
- Coordinate with production, inventory, logistics, and quality teams to ensure material availability.
- Manage purchase orders and track deliveries to meet operational requirements.
- Analyze inventory levels and forecast material requirements.
- Resolve supplier issues related to quality, quantity, or delivery delays.
- Ensure compliance with company procurement policies and industry regulations.
- Prepare purchasing reports, cost analyses, and procurement forecasts.
Required Qualifications
- 3 years of purchasing or procurement experience, preferably in structural steel, metals, manufacturing, or construction industries.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills with the ability to evaluate pricing, costs, and calculate utilization of steel.
- Knowledge of steel grades, specifications, and industry standards.
- Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
- Proficiency in ERP/MRP systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
Preferred Skills
- Understanding of steel market pricing indices and commodity purchasing.
- Experience with supplier relationship management.
- Ability to analyze cost trends and develop sourcing strategies.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
