Position Summary

The In-School Suspension (ISS) Facilitator provides a structured, supportive, and supervised learning environment for students assigned to in-school suspension while promoting student accountability, academic engagement, and positive behavioral outcomes. When there are no students assigned to ISS, the employee serves as a Floating Teacher Assistant, providing instructional and classroom support throughout the middle and high school as assigned by administration.

This position requires strong classroom management skills, professionalism, flexibility, and the ability to build positive relationships with students and staff while maintaining confidentiality and consistent expectations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

In-School Suspension Responsibilities

  • Supervise students assigned to in-school suspension in accordance with district and school policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe, structured, and distraction-free learning environment that promotes student reflection and academic progress.
  • Monitor student behavior and enforce established ISS expectations consistently and respectfully.
  • Ensure students complete assigned academic work during their ISS placement and communicate with classroom teachers regarding assignments when necessary.
  • Assist students in organizing and understanding assigned coursework while encouraging independent completion of assignments.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, behavior, work completion, and disciplinary documentation.
  • Facilitate restorative conversations and reflection activities when appropriate to support student growth and behavioral improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with administrators, counselors, teachers, and other support staff regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Escort students as necessary and ensure compliance with school procedures during transitions.
  • Report disciplinary concerns or incidents promptly to administration.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and disciplinary matters in accordance with district policies and applicable laws.

Floating Teacher Assistant Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom support for teachers in both middle and high school settings when ISS supervision is not required.
  • Assist with small-group and individual student instruction under the direction of classroom teachers.
  • Support classroom management strategies and reinforce behavioral expectations.
  • Assist students with assignments, projects, and instructional activities across content areas.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, assessments, and transitions as assigned.
  • Provide coverage for classrooms or student supervision assignments when requested by administration and permitted by district policy.
  • Assist teachers with preparing instructional materials, organizing classroom resources, and implementing accommodations and modifications for students when appropriate.
  • Support special programs, intervention groups, testing environments, and school-wide initiatives as assigned.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with students while encouraging academic success and responsible behavior.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Attend required professional development sessions, faculty meetings, and school trainings.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in responding to daily building needs and changing assignments.
  • Support school-wide efforts that promote a positive school culture and climate.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or designee.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree, paraprofessional certification, or completion of state-required educational support requirements preferred.
  • Experience working with middle and/or high school students preferred.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when working with students and sensitive information.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students and staff.
  • Ability to manage student behavior effectively using positive and restorative practices.
  • Proficiency with basic educational technology and student information systems preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of adolescent development and effective student support practices.
  • Ability to maintain structure and consistency while demonstrating patience and empathy.
  • Strong classroom management and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, counselors, and support personnel.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing assignments and priorities throughout the school day.
  • Ability to supervise students independently while maintaining a safe and productive environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and move throughout the school building for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry instructional materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to supervise students in classrooms, hallways, and other school settings.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position that follows the school's instructional calendar and daily operating schedule. The employee will supervise the In-School Suspension program as assigned and will serve as a Floating Teacher Assistant during periods when no students are assigned to ISS or as otherwise directed by administration.
