Job Description Summary

The Weld County Sheriff's Office is recruiting for Patrol deputies (Must be P.O.S.T. certified).

A Patrol Deputy is a law enforcement position that requires competency in detecting and investigating criminal activity; enforcement of local, state, and federal laws; preparation of accurate reports to help in follow-up investigation, criminal and civil court, and in department investigations. All assignments require rotating shifts since the Sheriff's Office functions 24-hours a day, seven (7) days a week. Other duties may include serving civil papers, guarding prisoners, and assisting other agencies.


Special assignments may require extended duties, training, and responsibilities, to include:

Drug Task Force
Field Evidence Technician
Field Training Officer
Investigations
Strike Team
K-9
Firearms Instructor
Armorer
Bomb Technician
Mobile Command Bus operator
Special Weapons and Tactics team
Drone Operator
Instructor in various disciplines
Honor Guard

Must be P.O.S.T. certified or by the hire date.

Job Description

Essential duties and responsibilities - 80%

  • Remain calm and respond appropriately to emergency and threatening situations; protect self and others in threatening situations; able to physically subdue and control unruly and resisting individuals.
  • Maintain Office proficiency standards in the use of firearms and other assigned equipment.
  • Safely operate a County vehicle in normal and emergency conditions.
  • Perform law enforcement duties requiring adequate psychological and physical condition.


Important duties and responsibilities - 20%

  • Successfully complete mandatory training
  • Participate in community service activities such as public service talks, PAL program, crime prevention activities, etc.

The following are the steps for the hiring process:


Step 1:

Online assessment through the National Testing Network (NTN). Be sure you select Corrections (for the Detentions position) and Law Enforcement (for the Patrol position). You have the option to take the test from your home computer or select a test site. If you have taken the NTN assessment in the past year for another agency, you may have it moved to Weld County.

PAT (Physical Abilities Test).

Step 3:
Background Check

The deputy will give you a background packet at the PAT OR you may pick one up at one of two locations (HR 1150 O street OR Sheriff’s Office Administration Building 1950 O st).
Instructions and the hiring steps are included in the packet.

Step 4:
Polygraph - scheduled by the polygraph examiner.

Step 5:
Drug Screen scheduled by a Sheriff's Office Employee.

Step 6:
Physical fitness examination - scheduled by a Sheriff's Office Employee.

Step 7:
Psychological Exam -scheduled by the polygraph examiner.

Step 8:
Hired.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

  • High School Diploma/GED


Skills and Abilities

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written English, and to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure, and operating manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of the general public or employees of organizations.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to operate telephones; computer terminal, keyboard, photocopier, and scanning instrumentation; gas mask; two-way radios; and law enforcement-related equipment, such as restraints and handcuffs.
  • Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to employment start date.


Licenses and Certifications

  • DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State Can be an out of state license, if employee resides in said state. Required
  • CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation Must be able to obtain CPR/First Aid certification. Required
  • First Aid Certification Must be able to obtain CPR/First Aid certification. Required
  • Must successfully complete requirements for Colorado Police Officer Standard training certificate Required
  • Must pass various psychological, physical, and background examinations. Required
  • The ability to speak a language other than English is a skill that enhances an employee’s ability to complete this job. The incidents that require the use of secondary language skill vary by day but are routinely frequent; it is expected that this skill will be used more than 11 times per month. The employee must be proficient in speaking the second language to be eligible for the bilingual pay differential.
  • Driving is essential in this position.
  • Candidate must have a valid Driver’s License and Liability Insurance Upon Hire Required
  • Candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) evaluation and if hired, will be subject to continuous monthly MVR monitoring and random drug screens throughout employment. Required
  • Pre-employment substance screening is required for this position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug screening. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing the screening in accordance with Weld County policy.

Tattoos:
1. Tattoos may be displayed while on duty or representing the agency unless considered controversial, disrespectful, or offensive.
2. Tattoos, scarifications, and brandings on the face, or front of the neck, are not authorized while on duty or representing the agency.
  • Modest hand tattoos are allowed, at the discretion of the Sheriff or designee.
  • Modest neck tattoos not extending onto the front of the neck, beyond the carotid arteries, are allowed at the discretion of the Sheriff or designee.

Piercings:
1. Modest piercing are allowed.
2. Nostril is okay; septum, bridge, nasal Lang & rhino piercings are not allowed.
3. No more than one piercing is allowed to be displayed.
  • Unusually large or obtrusive piercings are not allowed.
  • Ring thickness of 18 gauge (1mm) or smaller and a ring diameter of 10mm or smaller is allowed.
  • A stud size of 2mm or smaller is allowed.
3. Ear piercings
  • Sworn personnel, only females are allowed to wear one pair of post style earrings, one in each lobe, while on duty.

This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
