Duties
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, surgeries, and diagnostic procedures by preparing equipment and handling animals with confidence.
- Supervise veterinary assistants.
- Perform animal restraint using proper techniques to ensure safety for both pets and staff during treatments or examinations.
- Conduct laboratory tests, process samples, and interpret results to aid in accurate diagnoses.
- Maintain aseptic techniques during procedures to prevent infections and ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Handle animal husbandry tasks including feeding, cleaning, grooming, and monitoring health status to promote well-being.
- Support pet owners with pet care advice, including feeding, grooming, and basic training tips such as dog training techniques.
- Operate diagnostic equipment such as X-ray machines, ensuring proper positioning and safety protocols are followed.
- Assist with dental procedures by understanding dental terminology and supporting cleaning or extraction processes.
- Manage animal catheterization, IV placement, and other critical care procedures with precision and care.
- Maintain detailed medical records, update treatment plans, and communicate effectively with team members about patient progress.
Skills
- Proven kennel experience combined with animal handling skills across various species including dogs, cats, and equines.
- Strong knowledge of veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, physiology, and critical care practices.
- Laboratory experience including sample collection, processing, and analysis to support diagnostics.
- Familiarity with veterinary equipment such as X-ray machines and dental tools; understanding of aseptic technique is essential.
- Ability to handle animals confidently using restraint techniques tailored to individual needs; dog and cat handling skills are highly valued.
- Experience in pet grooming and pet care routines that enhance overall animal comfort and health.
- Knowledge of animal husbandry practices that promote hygiene and well-being in a clinical setting.
- Competence in performing animal catheterization, administering medications, and supporting anesthesia protocols.
- Excellent communication skills to educate pet owners about animal health topics including pet grooming, behavior training (such as dog training), and basic first aid.
- Prior veterinary technician experience is preferred; willingness to learn new skills related to laboratory work is a plus.
