Manufacturing Engineer Fiber Optic Assemblies – Hire for Projects
We are looking for a full-time engineer to join our team at the Williamsburg, VA site. The ideal candidate is familiar with mechanical engineering and brings an affiliation to fiber optics, optical lasers, or optical metrology instruments and/or medical device engineering.
General Tasks and Responsibilities:
- CAD Design & Drafting: Utilize SolidWorks to create detailed 3D models and 2D technical drawings for mechanical components and assemblies.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, including bills of materials (BOMs), assembly instructions for manufacturing, job releases, and machine parts drawings.
- Support the production floor by designing and building manufacturing assembly fixtures, go/no-go gauges, poka-yoke aids, and basic automation improvements to increase yield and repeatability of product.
- Provide technical support for sales inquiries by evaluating machining costs and capabilities to ensure accurate project quoting.
- Control of materials, article numbers, and documents according to internal and customer standards
- Assist with Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) a to ensure manufacturing is always using the most current designs.
- Interact with machine shops and material vendors to source components and ensure they meet our mechanical specifications.
- Support Design to Cost (DTC) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) initiatives to streamline the transition from prototype to high-volume production.

Qualifications:
- Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (strongly preferred) or related discipline.
- Relevant working experience of 1-2 years, ideally in a manufacturing or hardware development environment.
- Working experience with 3D CAD software such as Solidworks
- Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) concepts.
- Ideally, hands-on mechanical and machining aptitude
- Ideally, working experience in the manufacturing or application of fiber optic assemblies
- Self-Motivated and Self-Directed with strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Communication skills, cooperativeness, and ability to work in a team
- Effective time management skills with ability to prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Successful candidate must be a U.S. Person as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.62.
- Ability to legally work in the United States
