Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS)

Recovery Housing – Owatonna, MN
Full-Time or Part-Time

Position Summary

We are seeking a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) to provide peer-to-peer, non-clinical recovery support services to individuals living in our recovery housing program in Mankato. This role is grounded in lived experience and focuses on supporting residents as they stabilize, build recovery capital, and transition through early and sustained recovery.

The CPRS uses personal recovery experience to offer encouragement, mentorship, and practical support, helping residents navigate challenges, strengthen coping skills, and connect with community-based recovery supports. The CPRS works closely with residents, internal program staff, and partner agencies to promote recovery, housing stability, and overall well-being.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide person-centered, recovery-oriented peer support to residents within recovery housing
  • Build trusting, supportive relationships through appropriate self-disclosure and shared lived experience
  • Mentor residents in developing coping strategies to manage triggers, urges, stressors, and transitions
  • Support residents in identifying personal recovery goals and developing individualized recovery plans
  • Promote empowerment and self-advocacy skills that support long-term recovery and housing stability
  • Assist residents in identifying, accessing, and utilizing community resources and recovery-supportive services
  • Provide hands-on support with system navigation, appointments, and referrals as needed
  • Collaborate with housing staff, peer teams, and partnered agencies to support resident success
  • Participate in recovery-focused groups or activities as requested
  • Attend team meetings and case coordination meetings when applicable
  • Complete timely, accurate, and appropriate documentation in accordance with organizational, grant, and reporting requirements
  • Perform routine peer support and housing-related tasks that contribute to a supportive recovery environment

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Assist with special projects, program activities, or additional duties as assigned by management
  • Support continuous program improvement through feedback and collaboration

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of two (2) years in recovery from substance use disorder
  • Completion of a recovery coach or peer recovery training program approved by the Minnesota Certification Board (MCB)
  • Current CPRS credential through one of the following:
  • Minnesota Certification Board (MCB)
  • Upper Midwest Indian Council on Addictive Disorders
  • National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC)
  • Willingness to receive ongoing supervision related to the peer recovery role
  • Ability to pass a Minnesota DHS Background Study (required for recovery housing settings)
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to engage individuals with diverse backgrounds and complex needs
  • Experience working with individuals with substance use and co-occurring mental health conditions
  • Respect for resident autonomy, rights, and personal recovery pathways
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
  • Organized, reliable, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive information
  • Comfort with basic computer systems and documentation platforms
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills preferred

Tools and Equipment

This position regularly uses standard office and program equipment, including computers, laptops, tablets, printers, copiers, and other related office technology.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time

Pay: $18.50 - $21.00 per hour

Work Location: In person
