OSP Design Engineer

Job Summary

Wecom Fiber is seeking an experienced Outside Plant (OSP) Design Engineer to support the planning, engineering, and deployment of Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) infrastructure. This role requires a seasoned professional who can independently design, coordinate, and deliver high-quality OSP engineering packages for both aerial and underground fiber networks.

The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on FTTH design experience, understand industry construction standards, and be capable of working cross-functionally with permitting, construction, joint-use, GIS, and operations teams to deliver scalable, reliable broadband networks.

Key Responsibilities

• Design FTTH and backbone fiber networks including feeder, distribution, and drop architecture.
• Engineer aerial and underground fiber routes including conduit systems, handholes, vaults, cabinets, splice points, and pole attachments.
• Develop detailed construction drawings, BOMs, splicing documents, and permit-ready plan sets.
• Ensure compliance with NEC, NESC, local jurisdiction standards, and telecom industry best practices.
• Conduct field walks and site surveys to validate constructability and identify conflicts.
• Coordinate with utilities for joint-use pole attachments and make-ready requirements.
• Utilize GIS and CAD platforms (ArcGIS, AutoCAD, IQGeo, Vetro, or equivalent) to produce accurate OSP designs.
• Prepare permit exhibits for city, county, state, and federal ROW requirements.
• Partner with Construction, Permitting, GIS, and NOC teams to ensure timely deployment.
• Provide technical support during installation and troubleshoot design-related issues.
• Ensure designs meet cost targets, schedules, and quality standards.
  
  

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field OR equivalent industry experience.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on OSP and FTTH design experience.
• Demonstrated experience with both aerial and underground fiber deployments.
• Strong working knowledge of fiber architecture, splicing methods, conduit systems, and joint-use processes.
• Proficiency in GIS and CAD platforms.
• Experience developing permit-ready and construction-ready plan sets.
• Strong understanding of ROW, utility coordination, and jurisdictional requirements.
• Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with utility companies.
• Familiarity with ADOT permitting processes.
• Experience in ISP or broadband expansion environments.
  
  

Other Duties

Assist with vendor oversight and QC reviews, support special projects and network expansion initiatives, participate in continuous improvement initiatives within D&E, and perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
