COMPACTION INSPECTOR
POSITION SUMMARY:
Compaction Inspector: All Compaction Inspectors shall have a minimum of two (2) years experience
performing nuclear density compaction tests (ASTM – D6938-15) as a certified compaction technician.
Compaction Inspector: Shall possess a valid “American Portable Nuclear Gage Association” (APNGA)
certification for safety and operation or an equivalent certification as deemed acceptable by the WSSC
Project Manager
A Compaction Inspector is responsible for providing compaction testing services in coordination with the
WSSC Pipeline Construction Division Contract Managers. Testing will be performed on various WSSC
projects as designated by the WSSC Contract manager. Inspectors are expected to perform ten or more
compaction tests per day and to be familiar with all commonly accepted geotechnical practices pertaining
to such. Compaction inspectors will be available 24 hours per day 7 days per week to respond to
emergencies as necessary. Weekend and evening overtime is also a required part of this position. The
WSSC Compaction Inspector is responsible for ensuring full compliance with WSSC, SHA, County, and
local municipality’s specifications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Inspects compaction and trench backfilling
- Validates third party geotechnical inspections
- Observes compaction work in process
- Coordinates restoration work with contractors and local authorities
- Complete Daily Inspection Reports, Timesheets and Mileage reports in a timely manner
- Provide training to new inspectors
- Assist the Pipeline Construction Division Contract Managers as needed
- Attend staff meetings as scheduled
- Obtain required certifications and training as prescribed
- Practical knowledge of paving and landscaping restoration
- Knowledge of soil compaction methods and testing
- Knowledge of environmental regulations, including sediment and erosion control
- Ability to interpret and understand WSSC, SHA, County and other municipality specifications and
- Knowledge or basic mathematics
- Work outdoors in inclement weather and possess the ability to lift objects that weigh up to 50 lbs.
- Communicates effectively orally and in writing and able to work in a team environment
- Basic knowledge of computer programs, including but not limited to Word, Excel and Office
- Must fluently communicate in English, both orally and in writing

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent and two years experience with compaction testing operations or
engineering work
- Compaction inspections shall have inspected six pipeline construction projects in the past two years
- Nuke Gauge Certification - Active
- Successfully pass the Commission’s security background check
- Experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
- Experience using eBuilder
- Experience as a geotechnician
- ACI or WACEL or NICET certifications
- Erosion and Sediment Control certification
- MDOT Certified Flagger/Traffic Control Inspector
