Bridge Inspector – Maryland (Field-Based)

Job Type: Full-Time

Position Summary:

The Bridge Inspector is responsible for performing field inspections of highway and bridge infrastructure to evaluate structural condition, safety, and compliance with federal, state, and local standards. The role includes inspection of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and related transportation structures, documenting deficiencies, preparing inspection reports, and coordinating with project engineers, contractors, and transportation agencies. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical knowledge of bridge inspection procedures, structural components, safety regulations, and construction practices, with the ability to work safely in field environments under varying weather and traffic conditions.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct routine, in-depth, and special inspections of bridges, culverts, retaining walls, and transportation structures.
  • Inspect structural components including decks, girders, beams, bearings, piers, abutments, foundations, joints, railings, and drainage systems.
  • Identify structural deficiencies such as cracking, corrosion, spalling, settlement, fatigue, deformation, and scour.
  • Perform visual inspections and assist with non-destructive testing (NDT) activities when required.
  • Document inspection findings using photographs, field notes, sketches, and electronic inspection software.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports in accordance with National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS), AASHTO, and agency requirements.
  • Assist in determining bridge condition ratings and maintenance recommendations.
  • Verify contractor compliance with approved plans, specifications, and quality requirements during bridge construction or rehabilitation projects.
  • Coordinate with project managers, structural engineers, contractors, and transportation agencies regarding inspection findings.
  • Utilize GPS, GIS, tablets, and mobile data collection applications to record field observations.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA safety regulations, traffic control requirements, and company safety policies.
  • Participate in emergency bridge inspections following storms, floods, collisions, or other incidents when required.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, inspection logs, and project documentation.
  • Attend project meetings, safety briefings, and technical training programs.

Other Functions:

  • Provide technical guidance to junior staff and field personnel.
  • Support quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) initiatives during bridge construction and rehabilitation projects.
  • Assist in training programs for bridge inspection procedures and compliance standards.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of bridge construction methods and structural systems.
  • Familiarity with bridge inspection procedures and condition assessment methodologies.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and digital inspection tools.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, on uneven terrain, at heights, and over water.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in bridge inspection or transportation infrastructure inspection.
  • EIT or PE registration preferred.
  • NHI Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges certification required.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license with ability to travel to project sites.
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolding, and access elevated structures.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in field conditions including day, night, weekends, or emergency situations.

Preference(s):

  • Certification in Bridge Inspection or Bridge Safety Inspection.
  • Familiarity with MDOT, DDOT, VDOT standards, and AASHTO Bridge Inspection Manual.
  • Experience using bridge inspection software and digital data collection tools.
  • OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction Safety certification.
  • First Aid / CPR certification.
  • NICET Transportation/Highway Construction Inspection certification.

Pay: $36.00 - $39.00 per hour
