Weaving Spirits Festival of Two-Spirit Performance (WS) convenes local and national Native American artists whose genres range from traditional music to storytelling, experimental performance, and drag. Fall 2024 will see the return of our live performances, workshops, and community circles in the SF Bay.
Our values include: creating intertribal spaces of bold/experimental/de-colonial expression; connecting and visibilizing radical two-spirit voices and forms together with traditional ideas and culture bearers; calling for equity within the broader arts field and for more spaces that respect and amplify the sovereign voices of Indigenous peoples.
Mother is a dance, video, and performance art project with themes of motherhood, gender queerness, and wildfires. It's a collaborative work shared by two trans-femme multidisciplinary artists, Javier S-F and Ivy Monteiro (black & Indigenous Brazilian, vogue mother based in Switzerland, drag artist, music producer). With plans to tour nationally and internationally in 2025-26, the project has produced an art film (trailer link), and is evolving into “Mother/ Forgotten Blaze.”
As a published author and community advocate, Javier offers a range of creative engagements & presentations (including book readings, film screenings, and workshops). These are often independent of Weaving Spirits, though parts are sometimes presented alongside the Festival’s events. Both have won multiple competitive grants and toured outside of The Bay Area.
