Job Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Fleet Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's "yellow iron" fleet, including excavators, haul trucks, dozers, and support vehicles like pickup trucks and trailers. The manager ensures maximum equipment uptime, safety, regulatory compliance, and cost-efficiency. This role requires strong leadership to manage and maintain 50 pieces of heavy equipment along with the pickup trucks and trailers. Working in tandem with site superintendents, project managers, equipment companies, and on-site crews to meet operational goals.

Salary: $80,000–$110,000, commensurate with experience

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Fleet Lifecycle Management:

• Strategically plan and manage the acquisition, assignment, maintenance, and disposal of all heavy equipment and vehicles.

• Assist in developing vehicle and equipment purchase and replacement schedules, specifications, and budgets.

• Maintain vendor relationships for equipment, parts, fuel, and repair services, and negotiate favorable contracts when possible.

Maintenance and Repair:

• Modify, implement, and supervise a robust preventive maintenance (PM) program to minimize unplanned downtime.

• Oversee equipment inspections, diagnostics, and repairs performed by both field supervisors and third-party vendors.

• Manage parts inventory, purchasing, and supply to ensure employees have the necessary resources.

Asset Utilization and Optimization:

• Monitor the utilization and performance of all fleet assets to ensure they are assigned effectively and used efficiently.

• Use fleet management software (Driveroo) to track equipment location, hours, and performance data.

• Analyze data to identify trends, improve efficiency, and develop strategies to reduce operational costs.

• Coordinate equipment moves/transport to job sites utilizing brokers and/or trucking companies.

Team Leadership and Management:

• Lead and train a team of operators, superintendents, and other staff, including assigning work and setting priorities.

• Ensure all employees adhere to company policies, safety protocols, and standard operating procedures.

Budgeting and Financial Management:

• Develop and manage the annual budget for the equipment and fleet division, including tracking expenses and approving invoices.

• Monitor cost-per-hour and total cost of ownership (TCO) for all assets to inform repair, replace, or disposal decisions.

Safety and Compliance:

• Implement and enforce safety initiatives and ensure strict compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations, such as OSHA, EPA, and DOT requirements.

• Manage and investigate accident reports involving fleet equipment, and ensure proper documentation is maintained.

Qualifications:

Experience:

• Proven experience in heavy equipment and vehicle fleet management, with a strong background in the construction or a related industry.

• Knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems is often required.

Skills:

• Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.

• Excellent communication and leadership abilities.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel).

Certifications and Licenses:

• A valid driver’s license is required.

• Any certifications or applicable completed training are a plus.

Work Environment:

• This role is primarily management of the fleet from an office-based location with some travel to job sites and equipment facilities.

• May be required to respond to after-hours or weekend emergencies.

• Physical demands may include working in varying weather conditions and lifting up to 40 pounds.
