The Human Resources Generalist is a full-time, salaried position responsible for supporting day-to-day human resources operations across the organization. This role provides hands-on HR support throughout the full employee lifecycle, with a strong focus on recruiting and onboarding, employee relations, benefits and leave administration, HRIS management, and employment compliance.
The HR Generalist works closely with employees, field crews, supervisors, and leadership to ensure HR practices support operational needs, maintain compliance, and reinforce company culture. This position is ideal for an entry–mid level HR professional seeking broad exposure across all areas of Human Resources within a heavy civil construction environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Recruiting & Onboarding
- Coordinate recruiting activities for field and office positions, including job postings, resume screening, interview scheduling, and offer documentation
- Facilitate onboarding for new hires, including orientation, new hire paperwork, and coordination with safety and operations
- Maintain accurate and compliant pre-employment and new hire records
Employee Relations & HR Support
- Serve as a primary point of contact for employee questions regarding policies, benefits, and HR procedures
- Assist supervisors and managers with employee relations matters including attendance, performance concerns, and workplace issues
- Document employee relations activities and escalate issues as appropriate
- Build trust and credibility with employees at all levels, including field crews
Benefits & Leave Administration
- Assist with benefits administration including enrollments, changes, open enrollment, and employee inquiries
- Administer leave programs including FMLA and other company-approved leaves
- Coordinate with payroll and benefits vendors to ensure accurate records and deductions
HRIS & Employee Records
- Maintain employee data in the HRIS system, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance
- Run standard HR reports related to headcount, turnover, compliance, and leave tracking
- Maintain personnel files and ensure proper record retention practices
Compliance & Policy Support
- Support compliance with federal and state employment laws including I-9s, EEO reporting, FMLA, and recordkeeping requirements
- Assist with maintaining and updating HR policies, procedures, and the employee handbook
- Support workers’ compensation administration and coordinate with Safety and Operations as needed
Performance Management & Employee Development
- Assist with coordinating annual performance review processes
- Track review completion and follow up with supervisors and managers
- Support training, safety compliance documentation, and employee engagement initiatives
Additional Duties
- Assist with employee communication efforts including notices, postings, and internal announcements
- Support company events, training sessions, and employee initiatives
- Perform other HR-related duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- 1–3 years of experience in Human Resources or a related administrative role
- Working knowledge of HR principles, employment practices, and confidentiality requirements
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to communicate effectively with field employees, supervisors, and leadership
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in the construction industry or within a field-based workforce
- Experience using an HRIS system such as UKG Ready or Viewpoint Vista
- Exposure to FMLA, workers’ compensation, and employment compliance
- SHRM-CP or PHR certification (or interest in obtaining)
