Volunteer Coordinator


Position Summary


The Volunteer Coordinator serves as the leading efforts to recruit, engage, retain, and appreciate a nationwide network of volunteers who power the mission. This role ensures that every volunteer feels valued and supported, and that every client receives compassionate, confidential assistance.


Key Responsibilities


Volunteer Coordinator Duties

  • Recruit, screen, and onboard volunteers for roles across the organization.
  • Match volunteers to appropriate roles based on skills, interests, and availability.
  • Develop and deliver training materials and orientation sessions.
  • Foster volunteer engagement through regular communication, support, and check-ins.
  • Track volunteer hours, impact, and feedback using appropriate systems or tools.
  • Create and implement volunteer appreciation and recognition programs.
  • Support volunteer retention through meaningful connection, growth opportunities, and community-building.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure volunteers are integrated into program delivery, outreach, and events.
  • Work with volunteers to support the mission and coordinating key programs and services include case management, partnerships, and our community of solidarity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Technology & Data Management – Proficiency in using cloud-based platforms (e.g., Salesforce, Microsoft Teams, WordPress) for volunteer coordination, impact tracking, and reporting.
  • Marketing & Storytelling – Ability to amplify volunteer impact and organizational mission through social media, newsletters, and public engagement strategies.
  • Ethics & Confidentiality – Strong commitment to safeguarding client information and upholding ethical standards when serving vulnerable populations.
  • Adaptability & Problem-Solving – Capacity to navigate complex situations with resilience, empathy, and innovative solutions in a fast-paced, startup nonprofit environment.
  • Impact Measurement & Evaluation – Skilled in tracking volunteer contributions, analyzing program outcomes, and using data to inform strategic decisions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of Vulnerable Populations – Knowledge of challenges faced by individuals experiencing housing insecurity, immigration concerns, disability, or social isolation, with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
  • Nonprofit & Startup Experience – Familiarity with nonprofit development, volunteer-driven models, and the dynamics of building systems and programs from the ground up.
  • Human-Centered Approach – Background in social services, psychology, or human development to support empathetic and effective volunteer engagement.
  • Technology Proficiency – Comfort with cloud-based tools (e.g., Salesforce, Microsoft Teams, WordPress) and willingness to learn new platforms for volunteer coordination and impact tracking.
  • Strong Communication Skills – Excellent written and verbal communication for training, storytelling, and relationship-building across diverse audiences.
  • Leadership & Collaboration – Ability to mentor volunteers, foster teamwork, and create a culture of belonging and solidarity.
  • Adaptability & Resilience – Capacity to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment while maintaining empathy and problem-solving skills.

Working Conditions & Structure

  • Position Type: part-time
  • Work Environment: Remote, with occasional in-person events, meetings, or travel as needed
  • Reports To: Executive Director
  • Supervises: Volunteers and interns as the organization grows
  • Schedule: Committed hours with some flexible hours with availability for evening/weekend events or urgent client needs
  • Compensation: Grant-funded position with compensation determined by available funding. $18 to $30 an hour
  • Location: Remote
  • Technology Requirements: Must be comfortable using cloud-based tools and platforms including Salesforce, Microsoft Teams, WordPress, and other marketing and CRM tools
