FDA Commissioned Tobacco Inspector (Part-Time | 1099 Independent Contractor)

Position Status: Contingent Upon Contract Award

TactIQ Bizzell Joint Venture (JV) is currently building a pipeline of qualified candidates in preparation for the anticipated award of the FDA Tobacco Retail Inspection Program. Qualified applicants will be considered for onboarding immediately upon contract award and completion of FDA commissioning requirements.

Location: Remote Field Position – FDA Region 4

Applicants must currently reside in one of the following states:

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, or Wyoming.

TactIQ Bizzell Joint Venture (JV) is seeking qualified professionals to support the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) through the FDA Tobacco Retail Inspection Program.

As an FDA Commissioned Tobacco Inspector, you will conduct retail compliance inspections that help enforce federal tobacco regulations and reduce youth access to tobacco products. This is a flexible, part-time, field-based opportunity for qualified professionals seeking meaningful supplemental work while supporting a nationwide public health mission.

Qualified candidates with experience in public health, environmental health, food safety, agriculture, regulatory compliance, consumer protection, code enforcement, and state or local government inspection programs are strongly encouraged to apply. Veterans and former law enforcement professionals who are currently employed by qualifying state or local government agencies are also encouraged to apply.

Position Summary

Inspectors conduct Undercover Buy (UB) and Advertising & Labeling (A&L) inspections at tobacco retail establishments throughout their assigned geographic area.

This is a remote field position. Inspectors work independently from their home office while traveling locally to complete inspections. Administrative work, reporting, scheduling, and required training are completed remotely using FDA-approved systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct Undercover Buy (UB) inspections in accordance with FDA procedures.
  • Conduct Advertising & Labeling (A&L) inspections at tobacco retail establishments.
  • Observe and document retailer compliance with federal tobacco regulations.
  • Complete accurate electronic inspection reports.
  • Maintain required documentation and quality standards.
  • Participate in required virtual meetings and training.
  • Maintain FDA Commissioned Inspector credentials.
  • Travel throughout your assigned territory to complete inspection assignments.
  • Complete a minimum of 10 inspections per month.

Minimum Qualifications

  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Currently employed as a health, food, or drug officer/employee of a State, Territory, or political subdivision thereof, as required for FDA commissioning.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to travel throughout assigned geographic areas.
  • Ability to successfully complete FDA background screening, training, and commissioning requirements.
