Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency consists of staff dedicated to serving others, which include professionalism, empathy, respect, excellent client service, maintaining confidentiality, punctuality with regular attendance. We provide assistance to low to moderate income families to help address their most critical needs. The agency has over 70 programs, including valuable educational, housing, and emergency services.
Internship Description:
The Housing Counseling Intern will support certified housing counselors in providing guidance and resources to individuals and families seeking stable housing and financial wellness. This internship offers hands-on experience in housing education, client engagement, and case management within a nonprofit or community-based setting.
Interns Essential Functions:
Client Intake & Office Support

Assist with client intake forms and eligibility checklists

Schedule appointments and send reminders

Scan, file, and organize client documents

Enter client data into case-management systems (HMIS, NeighborWorks, Salesforce, etc.)

Help prepare client folders and counseling packets for in-person sessions
Workshop & Outreach Help
- Assisting walk-ins with homebuyer education or tenant-rights workshops
- Preparing presentation materials, sign-in sheets, and intake/disclosure forms
- Helping with outreach events or community fairs (Show Me The Money Day Event)
- Supporting social media or newsletter updates related to housing programs
Client Support (Non-Counseling)
- Helping clients gather required documents (pay stubs, leases, supporting documents for budget)
- Explaining forms or next steps without giving legal or financial advice
- Following up with clients on missing paperwork or appointments
- Making reminder calls or emails
Learning & Shadowing
- Observing counseling sessions (with permission)
- Shadowing housing counselors to learn case management
- Participating in team meetings and trainings
Important Boundaries (Nonprofit Best Practice)
Interns should not:
- Provide legal advice
- Provide financial counseling independently
- Make eligibility determinations
- Represent the organization externally without supervision
Qualified candidates:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in social work, public administration, finance, business, urban planning, or a related field
- Strong interest in housing counseling, financial education, or community development
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with diverse populations
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and/or data entry systems)
- Ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Professionalism and ability to maintain confidentiality when working with client information
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a professional office environment with a usually quiet noise level. This is largely a sedentary role and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, frequently use hands and to talk or hear.

- High school diploma/general education degree (GED) OR a combination of education and experience that is similarly equivalent.
- Pass Criminal Background check & Drug Screening
- Ability to work a hybrid schedule
