Scope

The Energy Education & Outreach Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating, teaching, and delivering energy education services to eligible households through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). This position develops and facilitates educational workshops, teaches energy conservation practices, promotes utility cost reduction strategies, and connects clients with weatherization, utility assistance, and community resources.

 

The Coordinator serves as an educator, advocate, and community liaison by empowering individuals and families to make informed decisions that improve home energy efficiency, reduce energy costs, and support healthy, safe, and sustainable housing.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

Energy Education and Instruction

  • Develop, coordinate, and teach energy education workshops for individuals, families, and community groups.
  • Create lesson plans, presentations, educational materials, and hands-on learning activities.
  • Teach clients energy conservation practices, utility cost reduction strategies, and methods to improve home energy efficiency.
  • Demonstrate the proper use and installation of energy-saving products and materials.
  • Promote long-term energy conservation behaviors through interactive instruction.
  • Evaluate participant understanding and modify instructional methods to meet the needs of diverse audiences.

 

Community Outreach

  • Plan and coordinate community outreach events promoting energy efficiency and available assistance programs.
  • Conduct educational workshops at community centers, schools, Head Start locations, neighborhood organizations, and agency facilities.
  • Coordinate educational events and public awareness campaigns.
  • Represent the agency at community engagement events, health fairs, and Resident Advisory Council (RAC) meetings.
  • Develop partnerships with community organizations to increase program participation.
  • Assist with outreach activities utilizing agency resources, including mobile outreach initiatives when appropriate.

 

Client Advocacy and Referrals

  • Assess household energy-related needs and identify barriers to energy affordability.
  • Educate clients on available energy assistance, weatherization, and home repair programs.
  • Provide referrals to the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), utility assistance programs, home repair services, and other community resources.
  • Assist clients with completing applications and gathering required documentation.
  • Advocate for eligible households to ensure access to available services.

 

Client Engagement

  • Conduct individual energy education counseling sessions.
  • Distribute educational materials and energy-saving resources.
  • Document all client services, referrals, and educational activities in agency databases.
  • Maintain accurate client files and program documentation.
  • Conduct follow-up communication with clients to evaluate outcomes and provide additional assistance.
  • Track referrals, participation, and client outcomes.

Working Conditions

  • Combination of office, classroom, community, and field environments.
  • Frequent public speaking and instructional activities.
  • Evening and occasional weekend events may be required.
  • Local travel throughout the service area.
  • Ability to lift and transport educational materials and energy kits (up to 30 pounds.

 

Program Administration

  • Maintain records of workshops, attendance, referrals, educational materials, and program activities.
  • Assist in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Monitor program performance measures and grant objectives.
  • Maintain inventories of educational materials and energy-saving kits.
  • Ensure compliance with LIHEAP requirements, agency policies, and applicable grant regulations.
  • Recommend improvements to educational programming and outreach strategies.
  • Perform work in a professional manner that upholds Wayne Metro’s policies and procedures. 
  • Other duties as assigned. 

 

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a professional office environment with a usually quiet noise level. This is largely a sedentary role and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, frequently use hands and to talk or hear.

 

Qualifications:

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in Community Development, Human Services, Education, Environmental Studies, Energy Management, Communications, or a related field preferred. Equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience teaching, facilitating workshops, conducting community outreach, or providing public education.
  • Excellent presentation, communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to develop educational materials and deliver engaging presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Experience working with low-income households and community-based programs preferred.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency, weatherization, utility assistance programs, or healthy homes principles preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management systems.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

 

Travel Requirements

  • Ability to travel to various sites.
  • A clean driving record is required to meet agency requirements for operating an agency vehicle to complete work-related tasks.

 

Licensing and Other Requirements

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

 

Work Hours 

The work schedule is Monday – Friday, with specific hours (and occasional Saturdays) to be determined by department needs.
