Scope:
The Activity Center Specialist supports day-to-day program operations inside the Activity
Center by delivering structured, engaging, and trauma-informed programming for shelter
participants. The role helps maintain a safe, welcoming space and ensures consistent
program flow, accurate documentation, and strong coordination with leadership. This
position is central to creating a supportive environment where clients can learn, build skills,decompress, and strengthen their overall stability while navigating homelessness.
Essential Functions
Program Operations and Activity Facilitation
- Develop, schedule, and implement a variety of Activity Center programming including
- wellness sessions, creative arts, educational topics, and life-skills development.
- Maintain a weekly activity calendar and ensure sessions start and end on time.
- Prepare all required materials, supplies, and set-up for each activity.
- Facilitate group and individual activities using trauma-informed and person-centered approaches.
- Support consistency across all Activity Center processes, workflows, and program expectations.
Client Engagement and Support
- Welcome clients into the Activity Center and model a respectful and inclusive
- environment.
- Encourage client participation, build rapport, and maintain professional boundaries.
- Assist clients in accessing resources or connecting with shelter staff for additional
- support.
- Monitor behavior and support de-escalation when needed.
- Uphold Activity Center guidelines to maintain a structured and safe space.
Environment and Safety
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming Activity Center at all times.
- Ensure equipment, games, and materials are used safely and responsibly.
- Follow all agency emergency procedures, incident reporting requirements, and safety protocols.
- Notify leadership immediately of any safety concerns, incidents, or space needs.
Documentation, Data, and Compliance
- Complete daily attendance logs, activity reports, and incident documentation.
- Record client interactions according to agency and funder guidelines.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation to meet compliance and reporting
- expectations.
- Support data entry requirements including HMIS entries if assigned.
- Follow confidentiality policies and uphold agency standards for professional conduct.
Training, Team Support, and Communication
- Participate in required trainings, onboarding sessions, and supervision meetings.
- Communicate daily updates and program needs to appropriate leadership.
- Collaborate with internal staff and community partners for special programming and guest-led workshops.
- Identify supply needs and support inventory tracking and ordering requests.
- Provide occasional on-call support to ensure program coverage and respond to urgent needs.
Other Duties
- Maintain a positive, professional, and solutions-focused approach with clients, staff, and partners.
- Perform work in alignment with all Wayne Metro policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
This position operates in a shelter or community program environment with moderate
noise levels. The role requires regular standing, walking, and facilitation of activities. The employee must occasionally lift and move up to 25 pounds. The employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands to handle materials.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required. Some college preferred.
Minimum one year of experience in human services, recreation, youth development,
shelter services, or related fields.
Experience facilitating group activities or workshops preferred.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and person-centered practices.
Strong communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to engage diverse populations with professionalism and empathy.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in fast-paced environments.
HMIS experience preferred.
Minimum Competencies
Proficient in Google Suite and basic computer applications.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain professional boundaries.
Ability to follow agency policies and documentation standards.
Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
Licensing and Other Requirements
Valid identification and reliable transportation.
Travel Requirements
Ability to travel between program sites, community locations, and agency events as needed.
Work Hours
Work is scheduled part-time based on program needs. This role may include weekday,
evening, and weekend shifts. Occasional on-call coverage may be required to support
program operations or special events. Subject to change.
