The Pathologist plays a critical role in disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment guidance by analyzing human tissues, cells, and bodily fluids. This role involves close collaboration with a wide range of clinical professionals, contributing significantly to patient care behind the scenes. This position will serve as the Assistant Medical Director, reporting to the Medical Director.
Key Responsibilities And Duties
- Diagnostic Examination & Interpretation: Conduct both gross and microscopic examinations of surgical specimens, biopsies, and cytology samples to diagnose diseases, most notably cancer.
- Laboratory Oversight: Supervise and manage laboratory operations across various disciplines, which may include hematology, chemistry, microbiology, and blood banking, ensuring the highest quality standards and regulatory compliance.
- Reporting: Prepare detailed, accurate, and timely pathology reports summarizing analyses, test results, and final diagnoses for treating physicians.
- Consultation: Consult with other medical professionals, including surgeons, oncologists, and primary care physicians, on test results, differential diagnoses, and appropriate patient treatment plans.
- Quality Assurance & Improvement: Engage actively in quality control and quality assurance programs within the pathology department to ensure the reliability and accuracy of all laboratory data.
- Autopsy Services (if applicable): Perform post-mortem examinations (autopsies) to determine the cause and manner of death for medical education or legal investigations.
- Research & Education: Stay abreast of the latest advancements in pathology and related medical fields.
- Equipment & Technology Use: Utilize and oversee advanced diagnostic techniques and equipment, including immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, and laboratory information systems.
- Education: M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensure: Active, unrestricted state medical license or eligibility for licensure in the state of employment.
- Certification: Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, or combined AP/CP, typically through the American Board of Pathology (ABP) or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
- Experience: Completion of an accredited residency program in Pathology. Fellowship training in a relevant subspecialty (e.g., surgical pathology, hematopathology, cytopathology) is preferred.
- Skills:
- Exceptional analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in diagnostic work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in using pathology laboratory software and diagnostic equipment.
