Primary Objective of Position: Develop an awareness of the role of science in economic and social progress; to motivate each student to acquire knowledge of scientific facts and principles, and skills in scientific methods of problem solving; to discover and develop special talents of students in scientific fields regardless of sex, age, race, gender orientation, national origin ethnic background, religious affiliation, or special needs.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
- Plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the student.
- Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students and to the Capturing Kids Hearts philosophy.
- Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate these objectives to the students.
- Prepare for classes assigned. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated, and show written evidence of preparation upon request from the supervisor.
- Assists in identifying student needs and cooperates with other professional staff and parents in assessing and helping students solve learning, behavioral and health problems.
- Communicate with colleagues, students and/or parents on a regular basis.
- Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct in the classroom. Develop a social contract for classroom behavior.
- Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
- Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
- Be available to students and parents for educational related purposes outside of the instructional day when required or requested under reasonable circumstance.
- Participate with the appropriate administrator to develop the methods by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
- Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment and materials.
- Strive to implement by instruction and action the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
- Evaluates student progress on a regular basis. Notify parents/guardians of any student who may be failing or near failing.
- Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
- Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives and methods. Assist in developing and maintaining a guide for all courses in specific curriculum area.
- Assists in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
- Responsible for co-curricular activities as assigned.
Specific Areas of Responsibility:
- Teach skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general science (including 7th and 8th grade), earth sciences (including 7th grade), 8th grade life science, biology, chemistry and physics to secondary students, utilizing standards and benchmarks.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Plan a science program involving demonstration, lectures, discussions and student experiments and organizes laboratory activities for optimum learning.
- Demonstrates scientific concepts y the use of scientific apparatus, experiments and standard or teacher prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aids.
- Provides individual or small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students and to accommodate circumstances where a variety of projects and experiments are being worked on simultaneously.
- Instruct students in the proper care, use and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment and plant and animal life.
- Provide safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment and tools.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior for a productive learning environment during class sessions, laboratory sessions and field trips.
- Evaluate each student’s growth in knowledge, skills and scientific attitudes in course being taught.
- Assist student in selection and development of individual research projects.
- Cooperate with school administration in providing science displays and programs for the school, community and sponsoring science activities.

The Secondary Science Teacher will be evaluated by the Principal in accordance with law, board policy, and the preceding job description.
