Job Description

The Assistant Director for Special Education shall report to the Director of Exceptional Learners. The responsibilities listed in this job description cannot be considered to be all-inclusive. These are guidelines to help identify the major elements of the position:

  • Providing up-to-date, research-driven professional development to school district staff, students, and/or parents. Offerings include a variety of topics that will ensure improvement in understanding, instruction, and support of students with disabilities.
  • Providing classroom observations followed by consultation and/or written feedback to support and assist exceptional learner sites with teaching techniques, behavioral support strategies, and material adaptations/modifications based on individual student needs.
  • Providing assistance to Districts with team development by facilitating team meetings and encouraging consistent and positive communication among team members between exceptional learner sites and home CSEs.
  • Providing parent support and education involving disability awareness/education, the IEP process, positive team membership and communication, and facilitation of good working relationships with district staff and community agencies.
  • Providing coaching, mentoring, and modeling to teachers and support staff with instructional techniques and strategies based on individual student needs.
  • Providing assistance with students transitioning between grade levels, school buildings, and program changes.
  • Monitoring transition activities for all learners ages 16–22 to include assisting with student transitions between grade levels, school buildings, and program placements.
  • Monitor and support transition planning activities for all learners ages 16–22, including post-secondary readiness and services.
  • Providing assistance to administration and other school staff in program support and supervision.
  • Independently reviewing, researching, and maintaining current and innovative knowledge, strategies, and resources for improved education and support of students with disabilities. Providing and disseminating information, resources, and/or materials to districts and P16 as needed.
  • Preparing materials for district sharing and staff development, scheduling daily appointments, managing and maintaining the program budget, and other program maintenance responsibilities as needed.
  • Assisting with the Student Referral and Placement Process.
  • Flexibility with changing requests and obligations that include skills in the areas of time management, organization, positive communication and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Completing teacher evaluations under APPR regulations.
  • Reviewing evaluations completed for all paraprofessionals and providing feedback as needed.
  • Attend regional and statewide meetings in place of the Director as needed.

The Assistant Director for Exceptional Learners reports directly to the Director of Exceptional Learners. The responsibilities outlined in this job description are not intended to be exhaustive but are provided as guidelines describing the major elements of the position.

This role provides leadership, oversight, and direct support for Exceptional Learners programs within the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES setting. It ensures high-quality educational programming, compliance with state and federal regulations, and effective collaboration among BOCES programs, component districts, families, and CSE teams. The Assistant Director also plays a key role in strengthening instructional practices, enhancing team collaboration, supporting families, and promoting positive outcomes for students.

Required

Job Qualifications

  • Valid New York State School District Leader (SDL) certification required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in school administration or special education administrative leadership required.
  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish collaborative relationships with component districts, families, community agencies, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to travel throughout the BOCES region as required.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a closely related field.
  • Special Education teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and New York State laws and regulations governing special education, including IDEA, Part 200 Regulations, Section 504, etc.
  • Experience supervising and evaluating instructional staff, including conducting evaluations under the Annual Professional Performance Review (APPR) process.
  • Experience developing and delivering professional learning for educators.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices, behavioral interventions, inclusive programming, and transition planning for students with disabilities.
