Job Title: DeafBlind Intervener

Department: Special Education/Student Services

Reports To: Site based principal/ Exceptional Children's Director

Position Summary

The DeafBlind Intervener provides one-to-one support to individuals who are deafblind by facilitating communication, promoting access to information and to the environment, and fostering independence. Working collaboratively with educators, therapists, families, and other professionals, the intervener serves as a communication partner and supports the individual's educational, social, emotional, and functional development.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent one-on-one intervention services for individuals with combined vision and hearing loss.
  • Facilitate effective communication using the individual's preferred communication methods, including but not limited to:
    • American Sign Language (ASL)
    • Tactile American Sign Language (TASL)
    • ProTactile communication
    • Object symbols
    • Picture symbols
    • Braille
    • Communication devices
  • Interpret environmental information and provide access to visual and auditory events.
  • Assist with orientation and mobility in collaboration with Orientation & Mobility Specialists.
  • Support the development of independence, self-determination, and decision-making skills.
  • Encourage participation in classroom instruction and social interactions.
  • Modify materials and learning environments to increase accessibility.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student progress and daily activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and family members to implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and intervention strategies.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, staff meetings, training, and professional development.
  • Follow established safety procedures while supporting the individual during school and community activities.
Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Completion of an approved DeafBlind Intervener training program or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Knowledge of deafblindness and its impact on communication, learning, and access.
  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities preferred.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL); tactile signing experience preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Comply with confidentiality requirements in local, state and federal policies and statutes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • National Intervener Credential (NIC) or state-recognized intervener certification.
  • Experience in educational, community, or residential settings serving individuals who are deafblind.
  • Knowledge of assistive technology and adaptive communication systems.
  • Familiarity with Braille and low vision supports.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, transfer, and assist individuals as needed.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching.
  • Ability to accompany individuals during educational activities.
  • Visual and tactile observation skills necessary to monitor communication and safety.

Work Environment

  • The DeafBlind Intervener works in a variety of settings, including classrooms and the full school environment.
