Overview
Wayne County Department of Mental Health is currently seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Typist to join the team.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
A. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; or
B. Two years of clerical experience which shall have involved typing; or
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as outlined in “A” and “B” above.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment; working knowledge of business arithmetic and English; ability to type accurately at a predetermined rate of speed; ability to operate, or learn to operate, word processing or personal computer equipment and software; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to write legibly; clerical aptitude; tact and courtesy; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Employees in this class perform work that is primarily of a routine nature, involving standardized clerical tasks and the full-time or substantial part-time operation of a typewriter or keyboard. Detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments. Employees in this class may be assigned to work on word processing or a personal alphanumeric keyboard and reviewing information on a display screen. An employee in this class may be required to undergo training to develop and/or increase skills in the operation of a word processing or personal computer equipment, and related software. Incumbents do related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Types forms, letters, envelopes, transcripts, invoices, vouchers, records, medical charts, payrolls, title searches, judgments, reports, index cards, time cards, and similar materials;
- Transcribes Dictaphone cylinders and/or longhand copy;
- May operate word processing or personal computer equipment to produce acceptable copy of manipulating an alpha-numeric keyboard and reviewing information on a display screen;
- May relieve a telephone switchboard operator and employees waiting on the public;
- Types and maintains various records and reports;
- Files correspondence, memoranda, reports, and other materials;
- Makes arithmetical computations on a variety of financial and statistical records not requiring account keeping knowledge and skills;
- Operates a copier and other simple office machines;
- Index materials and performs simple record keeping tasks;
- Make entries from original sources onto cards, bills, ledgers, or directly to computer files.
