Senior Manager, Federal Policy and Government Affairs

The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15 U.S. states.

The Waymo Policy and Government Affairs team has a front seat in this exciting moment in the evolution of autonomous driving technology, transportation and tech policy. Successful navigation of the policy landscape is critically important to deploying and scaling our business. Our team works directly with policymakers and third-party groups at the national, state and local levels to help advance transportation policy, educate on the safety benefits of the technology, and advance consumer awareness and acceptance. Internally, our efforts support the innovative work of engineering, product, strategy, and partnerships teams, and we work closely with highly-skilled legal and safety experts.

You will be based hybrid on-site in the Washington D.C. area and report into our Head of Federal Policy and Government Affairs.

You Will

• Under the direction of the Head of Federal Policy and Government Affairs, create and execute federal lobbying strategies that promote Waymo's policy positions, with a focus on Congressional Republicans.
• Build relationships with Members of Congress and their staff, and with other key external stakeholders who are influential on autonomous vehicle policy.
• Convey a compelling vision for the value of autonomous driving, Waymo's leadership role in the industry, and the federal policies needed to support these priorities.
• Develop subject matter expertise in main policy areas, as determined.
• Manage consultants and engage with trade associations and relevant third parties.
• Collaborate with other members of the Waymo Policy team and other internal cross-functional partners.
  
  

You Have

• Bachelor's degree and 10 years of relevant federal government affairs or federal government experience, including 4 years of experience lobbying Congress in the private sector
• Firsthand experience with how major initiatives get through the commerce or transportation committees in Congress
• Strong relationships with active Republican policymakers and other important right-of-center policy stakeholders
• Demonstrated track record of lobbying success (e.g., legislative wins, productive relationships with top officials, successfully shaping executive branch activity, etc.)
• Experience with building broad support for complex policy positions and overcoming political obstacles
• Ability to travel as needed, approximately 1 or 2 trips a month

• Experience working on regulatory issues facing highly-regulated industries.
• Passionate and knowledgeable about emerging technology and related public policy.
• Knowledge of the policy and regulatory environment surrounding autonomous passenger and commercial vehicles.
• Knowledge of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, privacy, and other public policy issues related to data-driven industries.
• Enthusiasm for understanding and describing complex technical matters and their possible effects for public policy
  
  

The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements.
