JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the agency’s Clinical Director, the Primary Counselor is responsible for providing direct resident care under the supervision of the Clinical Director. The Primary Counselor also maintains a safe and efficient working and treatment environment per company policies, procedures and best practices; communicates effectively with the treatment team to ensure safe, quality care is provided to all residents.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Provides individual substance use counseling sessions and facilitates both topic and process groups related to substance use recovery, health and wellness promotion, and crisis management.
2. Conduct initial and ongoing assessment of need for substance use treatment and other behavioral health needs.
3. Conduct crisis intervention assessments in a prompt manner.
4. Document all pertinent case information in the resident file and electronic record per policy.
5. Conducts assessments or screenings with residents to evaluate the nature of their presenting problems in order to determine their needs and develop appropriate treatment plan goals. 6. Develops and provides individual treatment plans; monitors, evaluates and documents resident’s progress.
7. Maintain regular contact with referent, probation officers, EAP, other treatment professionals and family members, when consents are placed.
8. Has responsibility for intake documentation. Prepares progress notes, event notifications and other documentation regarding residents in accordance with regulatory requirements and company policies and procedures.
9. Group preparation, in depth knowledge of curriculum, maintenance of group attendance, writing of progress notes, group record keeping.
10. Interact with the public, employees and other governmental agencies and respond appropriately to inquiries.
11. Monitors caseload daily to ensure required documentation is completed timely; including, but not limited to, assessments, treatment plans, case reviews and discharge plans. 12. Completes other tasks as assigned.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Certification:
1. Counseling certification from any of the following three Certifying Organizations: California Consortium of Addiction Programs and Professionals (CCAPP); California Association for Alcohol/Drug Educators (CAADE); California Association of DUI Treatment Programs (CADTP).
2. Have an Associate’s Degree and at least two years of full-time Behavioral Health work experience.
3. A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternate method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions may be required.
Training and Experience:
1. Two years of post-certification experience in a recognized social services or mental health care setting involving chemical dependency.
2. Software proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. 3. Valid, active CPR/First Aid certification.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND ATTITUDES REQUIRED
1. Knowledge of software programs for personal computer use, especially word processing, email, and spreadsheets.
2. Knowledge and experience in counseling and case management with substance use residents. 3. Ability to prepare, implement, and analyze treatment plans.
4. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion.
5. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, gaining cooperation and resolving conflicts.
6. Ability to plan and organize case workload, manage deadlines of him/herself.
7. Ability to maintain and demonstrate ethical professional standards and demeanor, including the confidentiality of employee and resident data, resident boundaries, and other sensitive information.
8. Demonstrated competence with, and continued commitment to respect for cultural differences and diversity, protecting resident rights.
9. Recognition of the limits of one’s own professional expertise and the willingness to seek supervision and/or support, as needed.
10. Makes clinical and organizational decisions with the residents’ and agency well-being and best interests in mind.
11. Provide treatment that promotes resident dignity, independence, individuality, strength, privacy and choice, recognizing the unique needs of the resident population served by the agency.
12. Recognize obvious symptoms of a mental disorder, personality disorder, or substance use.
13. Identify types of medications commonly prescribed for mental disorders, personality disorders and substance use, and the common side effects and adverse reactions to medications.
14. Recognize, prevent and respond to a situation in which the resident may be a danger to himself or others, behaves in an aggressive or destructive manner, is experiencing a crisis or medical emergency.
15. Recognize and respond to fire, disaster, hazard, and medical emergency.
16. Has completed all the requirements above and is documented in application in training including the ability to pass background checks required by Desert Recovery.
