Tooling Engineer
Role
Designs and develops casting tooling including patterns, core boxes, core masks, trim dies, NDT fixtures, and robot loading and unloading fixtures. Communicates with tooling vendors to assure quality, delivery and cost of the tooling construction. Leads APQP activities to ensure smooth production launch for assigned new programs.
Responsibilites/Duties
- Work directly with foundry tooling engineers on the design, configuration and build layout of mold and core box tooling.
- Layout multiple cavity tooling as directed by tooling engineering.
- Design cores including print area to satisfy casting requirements.
- Utilize 3D CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, NX, etc.) to modify, shrink, draft, radii, and fillets.
- Understand the design and build of VMM mold patterns, core setters, Laempe / CB core machines, and definers.
- Generate build and assembly drawings for pattern shop. Answer any questions that may arise.
- Work with other pattern personnel to determine tooling rework strategies.
- Responsible for making recommendations regarding process improvements as well as new technology.
- Order materials as needed.
- Dimensional verification/adjustments on tooling.
- Ability to apply non-uniform shrink, draft and offset parting to models.
- Ability to create 3D models from 2D layout drawings.
- Understanding of off-set parting and pattern offsets
- Able to calculate stock materials based on model information.
- Ability to compare 3D part models to 2D casting layout drawings for accuracy and sufficient stock material.
- Employ critical thinking, logic, and reasoning to troubleshoot and solve problems.
- Must possess good written and oral communication skills.
