Position Summary

The purpose of the Intern - Recreation position is to provide a currently enrolled college student, in the field of Recreation, Sports Management, Fine Arts, or History, the opportunity to gain experience in programs, services, and operations within the Recreation Department of a local government park and recreation environment. This position is required to adhere to all Waukegan Park District (District) policies and procedures.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assists with planning, organizing, implementing, and overseeing various aspects of recreation programs, including, but not limited to, events, goals, objectives, marketing, and services.
  • Assists in providing direct leadership and supervision for all assigned programs and services.
  • Assists in providing developmentally appropriate activities to accommodate varying abilities, learning styles, and special needs, and ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment.
  • Assists in evaluating effectiveness and efficiency of program and services, and making recommendations for introduction, modification, or deletion of programs and services.
  • Assists in the recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating part-time/seasonal/temporary staff and volunteers.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of marketing programs and services including, but not limited to, pricing and promotion consistent with department marketing strategy.
  • Assists in contracting with independent contractors and vendors for programs and services.
  • Assists in securing alternative funding through grants, sponsorships, and fundraising.
  • Assists in monitoring and maintaining inventory of supplies and materials.
  • Assists in preparing and maintaining reports and records for programs and services.
  • Accompanies participants on field trips.
  • Drives District vehicles.
  • Assists in preparing costs for programs, services, and facilities for the annual budget.
  • Assists in scheduling facility rental and program use.
  • Assists staff and volunteers in the performance of their duties.
  • Responds to customer inquiries or directs to appropriate staff as necessary.
  • Works special events as needed.
  • Works evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned.
  • Conducts duties adhering to all safety requirements.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor to support the department or the District.
Qualifications:

Age

  • 18 years and older

Education

  • Currently registered in a college or university program in Recreation, Sports Management, Fine Arts, History, or other recreation-related studies required

Experience

  • Minimum six (6) months experience in a recreation setting, preferably in a recreation department, school district, social services agency, or non-profit organization. May be obtained through a combination of volunteer, seasonal, part-time, or temporary positions

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Microsoft Office experience in Excel/Word/Outlook
  • Communicate effectively through listening, speaking, writing, and non-verbal cues
  • Demonstrate initiative and responsibility
  • Manage workload and hours with minimal direction
  • Make timely and effective decisions
  • Prioritize work efficiently and effectively
  • Follow procedures to obtain appropriate results
  • Develop positive interpersonal rapport with departments, public, vendors, contractors, media, and community groups
  • Identify problems or challenges and develop and implement solutions
  • Operate job related equipment
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations. Compute rate, ratio, and percentage
  • Recreation, parks, and leisure service operation principles
  • Recreation principles and philosophy
  • Demonstrate effective staff leadership
  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred

License/Certification

  • Valid and unrestricted driver’s license, not including vision restrictions for corrective lenses
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred

Residency: Employees are encouraged, but not required, to become residents within the boundaries of the Waukegan Park District.
