Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 14,000 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. Our District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9 – 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

Position:
Temporary-Head Grounds Keeper
Organizational:
Directly responsible to the Director of Operations and/or his designee.
General Duties:
To maintain grounds and to repair work on grounds, athletic field and facilities as assigned by the Director of Operations and/or his designee.
To be responsible for planning, scheduling, follow-up, and layout of all work for utility, semi skilled and unskilled workers assigned to grounds work.
The following specific duties are typical but not necessarily all of the duties involved in this position. Employees currently employed in these positions, will when necessary, be provided training to enable them to do work assigned for which they feel they are not qualified. Current employees and new employees will be expected to be able to perform 80% of the specific duties listed without further training.
Specific Duties:
To drive trucks, delivery vehicles, snow plowing equipment and similar equipment.
To maintain hand and electric tools.
To use safety procedures when using tools and equipment on jobs.
To plant trees, bushes, and flowers
To maintain school fields
To apply grass seed and fertilizer.
To treat grass, turf, trees and bushes for weeds, insects and diseases.
To take soil samples.
To operate boilers on athletic sites.
To maintain tractors and grass cutting equipment.
To schedule work with athletic directors and coaches.
Keep records and requisition supplies.
To perform custodial work as assigned
To perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations and/or his designee.
Must be in good health and able to perform all jobs assigned
Must be able to climb and adjust to heights
Must have three (3) years of practical experience, and training in grounds work or related fields.
Must have knowledge of rye and blue grass.
Must have knowledge of leaf spot, gray snow mold, dollar spot, brown spot, and their cure.
Have knowledge of bine weed, black medic, buckhorn, chickweed, dandelion, and such weeds that are common to this area.
Be able to understand written and oral instructions
Have knowledge of tractors, such as starters, generators, tires, lights, and all related components
Knowledge of sprayers, line markers, mowers, aerators, vacuums, spreaders, measuring tapes and all grounds equipment.
Must be certified to spray weed killer as required by State of Illinois.
Must be able to work harmoniously with others.
