Position Summary
The Head Coach leads the Waukee Lacrosse program with responsibility for building a championship-caliber culture rooted in character, player development, and competitive excellence. This role oversees the High School team including Varsity team and Junior Varsity. Sets alignment across youth levels.
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Culture
- Establish a “team first” culture based on respect, accountability, and unity
- Promote positive coaching, player leadership, and a strong team environment. We, Us, ours not I, Me.
- Model ethical conduct in line with NELAX, ILAX, Waukee Lacrosse and USAL standards
Player Development
- Plan, organize, and conduct effective practices focused on teamwork, character and athletic development to continue Waukee’s history of success.
- Evaluate player performance and support individual growth throughout the season for on and off field success.
Program Oversight
- Schedule and coordinate games with NELAX and other programs in alignment with Waukee Lacrosse goals.
- Lead Varsity team; attend ~90% of practices and all games
- Oversee JV program and coaching alignment (including partial game attendance)
- Support youth program through clinics (1-2 per year) and coaching guidance
Staff & Team Management
- Select and manage assistant/JV coaches (with Board approval)
- Maintain full authority over roster decisions and playing time
- Establish practice schedules, team events, and communications
Discipline & Accountability
- Implement and enforce a consistent discipline framework aligned with program values while promoting cross team engagement.
League & Community Engagement
- Represent the program in league (NELAX) meetings and scheduling
- Maintain positive relationships with officials and stakeholders
Qualifications
- Prior lacrosse coaching and/or collegiate playing experience preferred
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Commitment to player development and character-based coaching
Certification Requirement:
- USA Lacrosse Silver & Gold certifications
Compensation
- Compensation is commensurate with market and experience
Reporting
- Reports to Waukee Lacrosse Board of Directors HS Rep and President
Term
- One-year appointment, renewable. Primary season is Spring season which has responsibility starting in November and ends typically in early June. Practice normally begins mid-January. Fall season begins with practice after Labor Day and ends in October. Typically, two practices per week. Will discuss in more detail on coverage expectations of each season. Spring is mandatory and fall is optional for Head Coach.
