Job Description
Required Qualifications
- High School Graduate, must meet ONE of the following requirements:
- Complete at least two years of study at college (equal to 60 semester hours)
- Obtain an associate’s degree (or higher)
- Passed a paraprofessional test for certification
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with children with special needs, parents, staff, administration and the general public
Preferred Personal and Professional Competencies
- Passion for working with children with special needs in a collaborative environment
- Organized, capable, and able to multitask
- Desire to grow professionally
- Basic technology skills and the ability to apply these skills when working with students or completing other assigned duties
- Regular, timely, and predictable attendance
Major Job Responsibilities
- Build positive relationships with students, families, and staff.
- Support students with disabilities in academic, social, behavioral, and daily living activities.
- Assist students in participating successfully in classroom, school, and community-based activities.
- Implement accommodations, modifications, and supports outlined in students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Encourage student independence while providing appropriate assistance as needed.
- Promote positive peer interactions, social acceptance, and inclusion.
- Assist in implementing behavior support strategies and teaching expected school behaviors.
- Support students with communication, organization, and task completion.
- Collect and maintain documentation as directed by the classroom teacher or special education staff.
- Assist with personal care needs, including restroom support, dressing, mobility, feeding, and other student-specific needs.
- Help maintain a safe, positive, and orderly learning environment.
- Participate in required training, meetings, and professional learning opportunities.
- Perform duties independently and follow directions from supervising staff.
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Building and job role assignment for special education paraprofessionals, including LRE, individual student, and program aides, may change based upon student and district needs.
