Summer 2027 Distribution Engineering Intern

The Distribution Engineering Intern will provide engineering support services to all areas of WaterOne under the direction of the Engineering Department, which designs, installs and maintains buried piping infrastructure.

 

Compensation for this position is $20.00/hr. WaterOne's summer internship program runs from May 17, 2027 until August 6, 2027.

 

Essential Functions

  • Applies engineering fundamentals and established design practices in assisting to develop and implement project plans and construction.
  • Provides sketches and technical information and assistance for preparation of engineering drawings for construction or modifications of facilities, assist in creating engineering sketches, drawings, concepts and descriptions for new construction, relocation of and installation of buried piping infrastructure.
  • Gathers information from other utilities, engineering firms, etc.
  • Creates work orders and reviews construction plans and plots water facilities thereon.
  • Reads and/or creates plans including elevations, sections, cutaways, details, etc.
  • Applies knowledge of engineering in preparation of designs.
  • Creates and/or analyzes sketches and notes and other input material to determine best approach to complete projects.
  • Operates instruments and equipment for surveying, pressure and flow measurements.
  • Attends meetings regarding projects.
  • Investigates low- and high-pressure customer inquiries.  Provide information of technical aspects of water pressure/plumbing problems and solutions with customers.
  • Assists Project Engineers in design of distribution facilities by obtaining field information, elevations, etc. of existing water facilities mains and appurtenances.
  • Assists Project Engineers with pressure monitoring programs and corrosion protection programs.
  • Assists Construction Inspectors with obtaining GPS shots and coordinating contractor questions with Project Engineer.
  • Assists Project Engineers with construction project management before, during, and after water main construction to assist with various tasks.
  • Write specifications, memos, and letters.
  • Exchanges information and communicate as necessary with others.
  • Assists in performing hydraulic calculations using sound engineering practices.
  • Coordinates projects to comply with relocation agreements and memo contracts.

Required Education & Experience

  • Pursing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with at least two years of coursework completed.
  • Course work with an emphasis on mathematics, physics, fluid dynamics, project management, and/or land surveying is desirable.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to commit to a 12-week internship program.
  • Demonstrates capability for good judgment, initiative, sound planning and analytical skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computerized drafting instruments and equipment, particularly in the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
  • Ability to have good interpersonal skills and oral and written communications skills.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and continuously meet WaterOne driving standards.
  • Ability to successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening and background verification in accordance with WaterOne standards.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally lift/or move up to 5 pounds and 10 pounds rarely. This position will frequently work in outdoor weather conditions. Frequently work inside and outside WaterOne facilities and structures.  Outside working conditions are dependent on the weather, which involves extreme heat (above 90 degrees) in the summer and cold in the winter (below freezing).  Some work may be in non-heated and non-air-conditioned structures. Rarely perform field assignments in poor weather and driving conditions and deal with other hazards of field work. Rarely work at varying heights above 15 feet above the floor. Rarely has toleration of noise levels that are generally minimal but may be excessive for brief periods of time (hearing protection is provided.

 

The position requires the ability to remain seated or standing for extended periods and involves frequent use of computers and standard office equipment, such as copiers and telephones. Candidates must be able to travel between different work locations as needed and wear personal protective equipment when navigating construction sites.

The work environment for this position is a typical office setting. Employees will be expected to work in a professional office environment that includes tasks performed at a desk, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and filing systems.  The job duties for this position sometimes takes place in the field and/or plant environment where exposure to various environmental factors such as chemicals, noise from machinery, and fluctuating temperatures is likely and personal protective equipment may be required. The noise level when working in the field and/or plant environment is usually moderate to maximal.
